No #AARSBL25 for me, but @annakawm.bsky.social and I are having a wonderful time visiting my family through Thanksgiving! 😄 We joined my mom on the assembly line for (early) Christmas cookies a couple days ago.

It's done: I've submitted my PhD thesis on the text and transmission history of Ephesians! It will probably be two months or more before I receive the external reviewers' feedback and can share a final version with people, but for now, I can share the title and abstract pages!

The results are in, and I'm pleased to announce that Emily Fero-Kovassy is the Runner-up of this year's 3-Minute Thesis competition (and the recipient of $2,000)! Congrats to her and all of the placing ACU finalists!

A few stops later, in early November, we arrived in Metz, France for the #COMPAS2024 conference. @frdrqrey.bsky.social and Sophie Robert-Hayek generously organized it all. I'm glad I could attend, meet other scholars in computational phylogenetics, and speak on quantifying scribal habits!

A few stops later, we met with Christina Kreinecker in Leuven for a visit to KU Leuven library and a tour of the town. She treated us to a lovely dinner, as well. We had such a wonderful time!

A couple stops later, we visited the
@unimuenster.bsky.social's INTF. We received a warm welcome from colleagues there. Greg Paulson gave us a generous tour of the Institut and the town. He even treated us to lunch and souvenirs! My gift mug is now my go-to for mocha/chai breaks at school.

Vienna was another highlight. Annaka was excited to visit the home of Viktor Frankl, the founder of logotherapy and one of the three fathers of Viennese psychotherapy. We also got to eat at the Cafe Central, famous as a place where figures like Freud and Trotsky got their coffee!

Another favorite stop was Croatia's famous seaside city of Split. We indulged in the delights of cevapi (more than once) and toured the upper and lower levels of Diocletian's palace.

We continued up to Florence with some friends, where we enjoyed the food at the central market, the art at the Uffizi Gallery, and the iconic Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.

After the workshop, we took some extra time in Rome to see some of the can't-miss sights with friends. The Colosseum was probably my favorite!

We began in Rome for a higher-degree research workshop, with attendees from @irci.bsky.social, @humboldtuni.bsky.social, @kuleuvenuniversity.bsky.social, and
@uio.no. I presented the latest results of my PhD research and interacted with others' research. We got to see the local sights, too!

The results are in! My three-minute breakdown of my research, "Phylogenetic Textual Criticism: Art Meets Science," has been selected as the winner of the ACU 3-Minute Thesis contest and will be proceeding to the Virtual Asia-Pacific 3MT competition in October!

Goodness, has it already been a year since I got to join Bluesky? It's been good to be here. :)

P.S.: Saw this ad for my former hometown on the DC metro and couldn't help taking a picture

Altogether, the experience was unforgettable. I'm grateful to the SCIO group for making the workshop possible and for their generosity in bringing together and hosting students from all over the world for the event. And to my fellow alumni: I hope we cross paths again soon!

I was out one weekend for my sister's wedding (another nice thing about getting accepted to the workshop!), but the other weekend, I got to enjoy the sights and foods of DC and experience a Byzantine Catholic church service for the first time.

We had a busy couple weeks at the workshop. Every weekday, we got to attend lectures on biblical languages, textual criticism, and detective work on manuscript provenance. For the second week, Tommy Wasserman gave the Greek groups first-hand experience reading Greek manuscripts!

I had the pleasure of meeting other early-career biblical scholars specializing in a variety of research areas. Many of us shared our research, and we had a great time engaging with one another's work. After Gillian Asquith, I'm the second Logos scholar to represent @irci.bsky.social!
August 11, 2024 at 4:17 PM
I've been lost in writing for the last couple months, but I finally have a moment to catch up on here. Some belated news: I'm officially a Logos Fellow! The 2024 workshop was in DC. We stayed at CUA, near the beautiful Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

This feature finds practical application in many textual traditions, including the NT. Assimilation to a popular text (e.g., the Byzantine or Vulgate text) that achieved dominance at a later point would only be available as a transcriptional explanation after this point. (2/4)

After just a week, my paper on intrinsic probabilities in Eph 5:22 has gathered lots of attention! Thanks to everyone who's read it, and thanks to Peter Gurry for posting about it on the ETC blog (evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com/2024/03/furt...)!

I've just released v1.7 of the open-cbgm library! The newest addition is the enumerate_relationships module, which returns a list of passages where two witnesses have specified types of genealogical relationships (e.g., NOREL, UNCL). Check it out at github.com/jjmccollum/o...!

Proofs have arrived! Very excited to see this published soon.

Just over a month in, and my paper on Bayesian phylogenetic textual criticism with Rob Turnbull in DSH has just surpassed 1,000 views! Thanks to everyone who's read and shared it!

Thanks to everyone who's checked out the advance article of my paper with Rob Turnbull in Digital Scholarship in the Humanities. We appreciate your interest and support! And if you're just hearing about the paper now, you can read it for free at academic.oup.com/dsh/advance-... !
