Assuming EU can't (yet, if ever) replace US spending levels, I wonder what it would take for Trump to turn the taps back on:

NATO spending increase (already happening)
Blanket acceptance of mineral deal (principally accepted)
Zelensky resigning (already offered, if conditionally)

It looked like a 2nd Trump term would make US into an 'empty chair', yet the past few days/weeks give the impression that it's much much worse than that...to what extent has this vote/current Trump mentality turned US into an 'active threat', directly working against European interests?

Their genuine enjoyment of 'liberal tears' isn't a great signal: trying to break all social/economic/cultural/political institutions even less so.

Trying to chart a way back from such entrenched division is going to be one hell of a struggle.

What have I written that contradicts that?

It does indeed: which reminds me of the CS Lewis quote:

“those who torment us for our own good, torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

That being said, 'slaying' inequality likely provides better outcomes than removing the lesser evils of multiculturalism

They conceptualise themselves as noble knights called upon to slay demonic dragons, this is their great 'purpose'. Peace through strength.

There's no place for goodwill when the enemy is made into a dragon.

US hasn't just become an empty chair: it's actively harming the values and norms it once stood for.

Mutual co-operation toward whatever shared goals that might remain depend on trust, which is quickly evaporating. US cannot be replied upon to do anything more than pursue it's own interests.

If The Trump admin is calling for elections in Ukraine, the very least they could do is follow the same logic with Israel (where having fresh elections actually makes sense).
