Married father and stepfather. I do a fair bit of reading, play video games, and I enjoy a glass of whiskey here and there.
...and on top of having poor diet and not taking care of ourselves, we have a major car culture and commute a lot farther than most of Europe.

From what data I could find, about 1,500 people died in auto accidents in Britain in 2021. In that same year, over 47,000 Americans died on our roads.

According to the National Institute of Health, the top three leading causes of death in the United States are heart disease, cancer, and accidents.

I personally know many people here who subsist on convenience junk foods who don't go to the doctor regularly, we drink way too much sugar... (1/2)

My father-in-law suffered from undiagnosed sleep apnea for years, until he fell asleep while driving his work van and hit a parked car. (Nobody was injured, thankfully.) His work sent him for a sleep study after that, and he said it quite literally was life-changing to not be tired 24/7.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your mother-in-law.

This is very much an unwritten rule at all workplaces. We had a coworker re-heat a salmon dish a few months back, he caught so much flak for it that he swore never to bring seafood to work again.

That's a fair point, not every house has an attic you can move around in; if you have more of a "crawl-space" attic, that might have been harder to notice.

What's really messed up is that home inspectors don't seem to call this stuff out before you buy.

We had out-of-code wiring that got missed by two separate inspectors ("Ours", and one working on behalf of a buyer that backed out. Old wiring was caught by an electrician fixing something else.

You do what makes you happy, Jourdan. I quit Twitter because the high level of activity had me scrolling constantly. It was a huge time-sink. Bluesky *is* kind of dull, but that's probably for the better.

Relatable. I've had to give up on a number of games because of wrist or hand pain. I can basically only play turn-based games at this point. I love them, so it's not a huge loss, but I can't play Mario Kart with my kids for more than one GP.

That's awful. I'm so sorry, Jourdan.

'Eaters of the Dead' and 'Jurassic Park' by Michael Crichton, 'Four Past Midnight' and 'The Stand' by Stephen King between the ages of 12 and 14.

My parents are kind and always encouraged me to read, but being TV and movie people they had no clue how much more graphic books can be.

I would assume the shift ending Wednesday morning if you're working overnights. On top of that, if they want you to change back to day shift mid-week, I would expect at least 32 hours off between those shifts to *try* resetting your internal clock even a little.

What they ask of you is nuts.

Mine will be a senior in a few weeks, so let's not forget to take our vitamins.

Yikes! I used to do five 14s every other week, but not in a row. That's brutal.

You are a good human being. I hope this works out.

Make that three. Hidden gem on the 3DS.

I've not played the remaster, only the original on PC and PS3. I'm not a fan of the way level scaling works in the game, so that affects my opinion.

I would agree with the person suggesting you try the original first so that you're only out the price of a coffee if you find you don't like it.

Jourdan, as a totally outside of the situation observer, I think your ex just exhibited why your manager doesn't think she belongs in the position she has.

I've worked with people like that. They don't last in leadership roles in decent companies because they drive people away.

Thanks to the both of you for pointing me in the direction of an alternative app for learning Japanese.

That's insane. I haven't bought disc-based games since the PS3 (couldn't find a PS4 during the pandemic and had to settle for a digital-only Xbox Series S for my boys).

I would definitely be discouraged from buying physical games in that scenario.

Final Fantasy Tactics. A friend bought it for me for Christmas a few years back because he knew how much I loved the game and how many hundreds of hours I've spent playing it. Always puts me in a good mood.

Having worked retail electronics for number of years in my youth, can definitely confirm. A week to a month before launch the units will arrive in-store, and if management has half a brain they'll hurry to lock them away in a secured area and tell only a few people about it.

My friends introduced me to Final Fantasy 6 on the SNES when we were in elementary school. (You could plug in a second controller and assign certain party members to Player 2.)

I was controlling Shadow and I threw Atma Weapon at a random enemy. I've never seen someone hit "Reset' that fast!
