Objective: To become the most electrifying man in turf writing

Eclipse Award winner. Paulick Report bloodstock editor. Small track guy. Moonlights as The Haiku Handicapper.
Excited for the annual meeting of the Royal Charley Fan Club in Baltimore after the Preakness. Any opportunity to spend time with the old man and show him my gratitude is something I cherish.

Royal Charley, the horse that helped me decide who and what I wanted to be when I grew up, turned 25 today. His most frequent partner in the saddle, Jareth Loveberry, is riding in the Kentucky Derby this Saturday. The most incredible story I’ve ever gotten to tell keeps getting even more incredible.

Spent the day with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Triple Crown winner Justify and multiple blue ribbon winner Blueberry. A pretty solid trifecta.

Hangman Page just beat Josh Alexander, but @brandontaggart.bsky.social has also beaten Josh Alexander. I saw it with my own two eyes.

This means we need to see Taggart/Page to truly determine who is the best. #BookItTony

Today’s third race at Colonial Downs features a pair of full-brothers: The quirky, curious younger brother Eastbostonbenny and the all-business older sibling Ben’s Hero.

Both are homebreds for Lilian Klesaris, the first and only horses she’s bred, both sired by Bucchero.

A snow day check-in with Royal Charley. Still his spry, grumpy self at age 25.

Wild to consider Charley has been part of my life longer than he hasn’t.

Before she was Horse of the Year, @thorpedoanna.bsky.social proved she could take one heck of a selfie. Congrats to a deserving winner.

This window, and its contents, will be studied by future generations when examining America during this time period. You know, assuming education isn’t outlawed. #TikTokBan

I’ve been very impressed by Preakness winner Seize the Grey during my visits to Gainesway. His sire Arrogate had an especially deep heart girth, and he passed that down to his son. That’s a trait I like to see.

Newcomer Domestic Product has taken up the late Uncle Mo’s stall at Ashford Stud. No pressure, kid.

Hip 865, Grade 1 winner True Timber, will be on offer tomorrow at the Keeneland January Sale. His first foals are 2yos of 2025.

I'm feeling homesick, so here's a picture of Mount Pleasant Meadows from 2009. You could always tell the average field size during any given meet by the length of the grass in each paddock stall.

I mean, who can say no to that face?

Me at any given moment toward any number of characters watching Season 2 of Squid Game.

Happy (Jockey Club) birthday to the Thoroughbreds I’m lucky enough to call friends. Blueberry turns eight, Royal Charley turns 25, and I can’t decide which number freaks me out more.

Uncle Mo accomplished so much over the course of his life, but I’d argue the most impactful was helping give the world Blueberry.

The American Graded Stakes Committee saw the issue with an overabundance of graded stakes races with small, weak fields and said "Full Steam Straight Ahead!"

Rough day for my selfie friends. Sad we never got a chance to see what Always Dreaming could do in a regional market. With his ability to command a pace, I think he would have thrived.

If not for Lemon Drop Kid, we wouldn’t have Blueberry. For that, I’ll always be grateful.

Z - Zanthus Fury. One in a tight circle of horses that could consistently hang with top local Arabian Catch Me Ridin Dirty. He was the only horse to beat "Dirty" in his first 12 starts, doing it twice. And look at those ears!

Y - No 'Y' horses in the files either, somehow. Instead, here is one of the artsier shots I stumbled into during a race card so rainy, the first two finishers probably got to represent their species on the ark.

In case you need a timeline cleanse, here’s a picture of Tacitus sticking his tongue out at Coco, the resident cat at Taylor Made Stallions.

X - Well, this is embarrassing. It appears I didn't photograph a single horse whose name started with the letter 'X' and trust me, I combed the files. Oh well. Have this picture of the MPM winner's circle. I miss this place so much.

W - Waterbury (#3) was one of only a small handful of horses that could close with regular success at MPM - success to the tune of 12 wins at the track, tied with three others for the most by a Thoroughbred in MPM's history. His clashes with Flame of Justice were the stuff of legend.

V - Vino Rosso. I don't really have a good story for this one, but whenever someone mentions the name in the context of a racehorse, this will never not be where my mind goes first, with apologies to the BC Classic winner.
