I agree that there’s no comparison with how much worse Trump is than Nixon in that Nixon knew how government worked & implemented actual coherent policies whether you agreed with them or not.

When it comes to Trump, we better not forget him after he’s gone. History repeats itself if you do.

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
We're finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio

Gotta get down to it, soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been gone long ago
What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Neil Young / CSNY’s “Ohio” lives on & is still very relevant in 2026. I don’t expect the relevance of Springsteen’s song to fade away over time.

I was the in same boat in July/August for 2 1/2 weeks this past summer when traveling through France, Switzerland, Italy & Spain with my wife & 22 year old daughter. At one point, I asked a group of tourists on a small food tour in Milan to say a prayer for the US if they were religious.

I apologize if you took offense & I’m really not picking on you or trying to make you feel bad, but I hear this sentiment all the time. I am genuinely curious as to what people who express this belief expect Democratic leadership to be doing one week into the new term.
January 29, 2025 at 12:21 AM
Fair enough. Your belief is that the Democrats won’t do shit. What kind of shit do you believe that Democrats should be doing other than speaking out about the illegalities as they are doing now and filing lawsuits in court as they are doing now? I am respectfully asking what you expect them to do?
January 28, 2025 at 11:47 PM
That is what will almost certainly happen.

Can you provide a couple of examples where the Supreme Court has ruled that he can use congressionally-allocated money for whatever stupid things he wants? I’ll wait. Trump has both legislative bodies with the House being an extremely narrow margin. The way to get these through is to change the law.
January 28, 2025 at 7:53 PM
Roe v Wade was precedent, not black letter law. Citizens United equivocated corporate campaign funding as free speech. Presidential immunity enshrined in the Constitution. None were black letter federal statutes like now. The majority will rule that the way to change statutes is through legislation.
January 28, 2025 at 7:41 PM
Trump can’t be charged criminally per the Supreme Court, but the majority of current justices (excluding Alito & Thomas) will not uphold the blatant violations of black letter law that are encompassed in the fire hose of Executive Orders coming from the White House after lower courts throw them out.
January 28, 2025 at 7:31 PM
Sorry, not Scalia. I meant Alito.
January 28, 2025 at 7:20 PM
Supreme Court is, but not all courts. There are plenty of reputable and honorable judges across the country who value honor and integrity. Even at the Supreme Court level the majority of them (Thomas and Scalia excluded) won’t stand for the Executive Orders because they are blatantly illegal.
January 28, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Democrats have no power to stop any of these actions following the 2024 elections. Only courts have that power and dozens of lawsuits are being filed.

I’ve come to accept that this is what American voters as a whole wanted, so FAFO indeed. File in courts & hold on tight until the 2026 elections.

The Army Corps of Engineers that manages federal water projects all over the country (remember Katrina?) equals the military entering a state to turn on the water? Okay.

I read all of his articles in The Atlantic as well. You are missing Frum’s very obvious sarcasm when he categorizes that trying to kill one’s husband is a “courtesy problem”. It couldn’t be more obvious to me.

Yes, it is most definitely sarcasm. You haven’t listened to him the past 8 years.

I disagree on this one, Tom. Pardoning politically-connected for relatively minor criminal convictions (failing to file taxes that were later paid & lying on a gun form that he wasn’t using drugs) are typical types of pardons from both D & R presidents over the years. Beau was a political piñata.

Human beings are good at seeing through frauds. Not perfectly good at it. Not always as fast as might be. And not everybody. But a just-sufficient number of us, sooner or later, spot the con.

Mirrors my pre-election thoughts. Sadly, I’ve come to realize that Trumpist is where our country is at now.
