View of our neighbour’s place across the road this morning. There will be scenes like this all along the coast today. Heartbreaking 💔

What a mess. Around a quarter of a million people without power mostly in northern NSW and SE Queensland. Damage will become clearer as day breaks. Impacts will be felt for years.

Coastal communities from Ballina all the way north to the Queensland border are now under evacuation orders. Severe storm surge will break through dunes and inundate homes in many areas. This is going to be a historic storm. My heart is breaking for our beautiful region 💔

I live in between these two data points. Either way, I'm terrified of what Cyclone Alfred is going to do to our beautiful region. So many people in the Northern Rivers have already been through so much. It's heartbreaking. Hope our home holds up 🙏

Feeling sick to my stomach about Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaching SE QLD. Around 4 million people live in this area. Buildings this far south are not built to withstand cyclones. How much do we need to lose before we take climate change seriously?

Enjoying my residency in beautiful Lake Macquarie on the New South Wales coast. Reflecting on the inevitability of inundation from sea level rise in Australia's most exposed estuary. I'm giving two public talks on climate change while I am here. Tickets are free, details below.

New analysis shows 2024 was the Earth's warmest year on record – 1.6C above pre-industrial levels. One day it will be one of the coldest this century. So while the Californian wildfires are tragic, this destruction is just a preview of things to come... climate.copernicus.eu/global-clima...

2024 was a tough year for me, but a good year for my writing. ‘Highway to Hell’ kept me busy all year, and it was great to be included in two terrific anthologies. ‘Humanity’s Moment’ was shortlisted for a prize in the US and reprinted in Australia. Thanks for your support 🙏

Although I am starting to glitch out in the relentless heat and humidity, an upside has been an unusual visit from this phenomenal fella. I think it might be a type of owl moth that is more common in the tropical parts of Australia? Maybe it hitched a ride on the persistent northerlies? It’s huge!

Attended a very informative seminar about the BoM–CSIRO State of the Climate 2024 report. A finding that hit me hard was that the extreme year of 2019, Australia's hottest and driest on record, will become an average year between 2021-2040. As a reminder, 2019 looked like this...

When I woke up this morning it was 22C with 97% humidity. Overnight temperatures have been hovering around 21-24C for a long time. Unsurprised to see record high minimum temperatures along the coast during spring. Persistent northerlies. Not looking forward to this summer!

Tropical heat and humidity spilling down Australia's east coast. Westerly storm tracks displaced poleward pulling in moist northerly and easterly flow. Northern NSW already experiencing minor flooding from a string of heavy downpours. Wondering whether this will be a common pattern this summer...
