100% wondering the same thing. It feels like being at a party where I don’t know anybody and I’m not yet sure who is who and how to approach making connections.

I have a playlist for you: Cascadia

These are songs by artists in the northwest USA who are active. I need to update it, but it’ll give you a snapshot on some great indie talent in Cascadia.

Last thing I’d say is that the original article you posted captures artist sentiment well: we have a problematic relationship with Spotify. We need it more than it needs us.

What it doesn’t provide is evidence that Spotify users are dissatisfied with the product direction.

The difference matters

Which sucks.

Here’s the thread btw…

Lots of interesting responses. I don’t have a huge following in Threads, the algorithm kicked this one up way beyond my normal engagement.

What keeps you on Spotify? Everyone knows it’s bad for artists. And it’s getting increasingly worse for its own customers, pushing them away from music to other forms of media. Here’s a fun thought ...

The work was worth it, but it required focused effort, and that might be the problem competitors face with Spotify: people are accustomed to not having to think about it.

Or to frame it a different way: the slow drift toward an everything app might not veer in to the intolerable for most users.

What was interesting to me is that there seemed to be an openness to try something else if the recommendations were as good, and ironically I’ve been finding Tidal’s discovery and recommendations to be really good, but to get there I had to export likes and playlists from Spotify and import them.

1. The changes didn’t bother them enough to give up the value they perceive Spotify provides with music discovery & recommendations, playlists, and their history of likes.
2. They tend to like not having to use a different app for podcasts.
3. They were ambivalent about artist royalties.
