If you can point me to one of those companies offering on-the-spot short form translation, I would be delighted to use them over Google Translate or DeepL Translate whenever possible! I assumed, maybe wrongly, that this kind of service would be way too expensive for me.

I'm stealing work if I use AI to generate me a new ad for my business. I'm not stealing work if I'm standing in the grocery store and need to know if the gyoza is going to give me hives, and I use AI to translate the ingredient list. Anybody who can't tell the difference is being lazy.

Maybe it's just a matter of drawing a line between regular consumers using it and big companies using it on a commercial scale? I'd agree that the latter is definitely bad

I don't disagree with your criticisms of machine/AI translation at all. I disagree with your conclusion that regular everyday people who see a Japanese article and want to read it are being shitty by feeding it to a machine translator instead of hiring a person on the spot.

Not everybody is going to be able to go out and learn Japanese, though. Is it shitty to not want to be penned in by that?
