Hey @microsoft.com! Here's what Copilot tells me about its environmental impact. Does this seem right to you?

As much as Les Dérailleurs are "punkish", we had never played a house show until Friday night. Thanks so much to @perennialtheband.bsky.social for inviting us, Tori for hosting and the Polaroids, Radical Joy and Teenage Tom Petties for their fantastic sets, and Michael Rogers for the non-Polaroids.

@bprickett.bsky.social, Josh and I have a new paper "Representing and Learning Stress: A MaxEnt Framework for Comparing Learning Across Grammatical Theories".

We celebrated with dinner at the Quarters.

The paper is here (our software is linked in it).

Can you solve this riddle?

Laurie Godfrey, a UMass anthropologist, shared this joke with me that her dad Elliot Rohde used to tell. He called it Brooklyn math, shared it with me after I told her I was interested in local accents. She also told me about ‘putting the meat up’ in Long Island English.

@bprickett.bsky.social is offering a new on-line computational linguistics course 12/18/23 to 01/31/14. It's a UMass course, and should presumably transfer. It has a prerequisite, but that can be waived if you have sufficient Python background.

There's also a footnote in the chapter that I had missed before.

Whenever I talk about “The linguistic consequences of being a lame” in class, I point to the sociometric diagrams as prefiguring later work on the fine structure of social groups. From now on, I will be properly attributing them to Teresa Gnasso Labov. (p. xxiv, Language in the Inner City)

Here's the Society in Computation in Linguistics proceedings download map from the Digital Commons. More than 85k downloads in total, almost 1.5k in the last month.

Open access rocks, as do the UMass open access librarians.
