"In July alone, nearly 12,000 children in Gaza were identified as acutely malnourished - The highest monthly figure ever recorded.

“This is clear evidence that malnutrition is accelerating rapidly, putting young lives at grave risk.”
August 7, 2025 at 4:05 PM
The images of malnourished children and stories coming out of Gaza should not be happening in the 21st century. And it certainly shouldn’t be happening somewhere where food is just a matter of miles away.

Speaking to @jaketapper.bsky.social about #Gaza last night

The images coming out of Gaza over the past few days do far more than my words to convey the severity of the situation for children.

But still glad to join @caitrionaperry.bsky.social to unpack just why severe malnutrition is one of the deadliest threats to a young child’s survival. #gaza

There seems to be a trend at the moment of calling something 'humanitarian' and then believing it becomes so, but that's simply not how it works...

'Humanitarian work has to adhere to the principles of independence, neutrality, impartiality and humanity.’

After more than 600 days, parents & families in Gaza are exhausted, but they persevere in the hope of a ceasefire, that they can start to rebuild their lives.

And UNICEF and the UN will continue to persevere with them.

Glad to speak to Jessica Dean on #Gaza this weekend

‘Survival cannot be the privilege of those who can go and search for it.

‘We have to meet vulnerable children, new mums, disabled children, the elderly, the sick, the infirm where they are. And that means through sustained, unimpeded humanitarian access’

‘The reality is for children and families in Gaza there is no escape, they cannot leave, they cannot flee in search of safety for their children.

‘They are trapped. And so we, the UN, has to be able to reach them where they are.’

Glad to join @caitrionaperry.bsky.social on #Gaza this eve

"Those of us who have spent time in clinics and hospitals treating severe acute malnutrition will tell you, it is not the sound of infants crying that fills the air, but the silence of children and babies too weak to even cry."

UNICEF Director, Child Nutrition and Development Joan Matji

For every $1 the world spent on humanitarian aid in 2024, it spent almost $70 on the military.

And we wonder why humanitarian needs keep growing.

'Last night, according to the latest reports, a 12-year-old girl was killed and a 6-year-old injured in attacks that hit #Dnipro region.

The killing and maiming of children must stop.

An unconditional and immediate ceasefire is needed now across #Ukraine'

“What is happening in Zamzam is not just another tragedy of war, it is a failure to protect the most basic right of a child: to be safe.

“A week of indiscriminate shelling, mass displacement, and the targeting of civilians, these are deliberate choices being made by parties to the conflict.”
April 18, 2025 at 12:45 PM
From our colleagues in Ukraine:

'Four children reportedly injured in an attack in Kropyvnytskyi last night.

Every night, children in Ukraine go to bed with uncertainty and fear as attacks continue to hit civilian areas.

Attacks must end. Children must always be protected.'

A new polio vaccination campaign in Gaza is scheduled for this weekend, led by the Palestinian Ministry of Health with support from UNICEF, WHO & partners, aiming to reach 591,000+ children under 10.

Polio remains a threat for children - every dose protects.

"I saw dead people and bodies torn apart. It was not a pretty sight,"
13-year-old Mohamed

Words no 13-year-old - no child - should ever have to utter.

There is far too little attention on the crisis for children in eastern #DRCongo

"We are receiving horrific reports of grave violations against children by parties to the conflict, including rape and other forms of sexual violence at levels surpassing anything we have seen in recent years."

Thinking today of the children and families I met in Syria and Turkiye in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that hit two years ago today, which were followed by thousands of aftershocks, killing and injuring thousands of children across the two countries.
