Funny thing is, we joined in the first place because our economy was heading for the U-bend. Now a bunch of loons across the political spectrum seem determined to ignore the fact that the bend is again beckoning. And it hasn’t been cleaned in 50 years. Basically, without rejoining, we’re in the shit

The evil old witch was right, wasn’t she. One of the few times I agreed with her.

Trump is clearly a problem and the US is not an ally with him in charge but we are at risk of fragmenting all the organisations that have kept the peace in Europe since WW2. We look like we are in disarray.

I don’t entirely disagree, Pete, but these conversations should be behind closed doors. I was extremely critical when Trump talked about leaving NATO because it sends a message to our enemies that we are weak. It sends the same message when Zelensky says it. Putin will capitalise on any weakness.

Depends on what your end goal is. If you want to occupy a country that is notoriously difficult. If you just want to destroy it and kill large numbers of its people, then that is a lot easier. Russia has stated that it wants to do that to us. Hence the need for a deterrent.
November 24, 2025 at 10:45 AM
You simply can’t know that. Neither can I to be fair but my point is that you are speculating.

There is a simple solution to this. Rejoin the EU.

We shouldn’t be asking whether Ukraine’s army should be capped in size. They were not the aggressors. Russia should agree to have its army capped. Never going to happen but why then is it considered reasonable to expect Ukraine to leave itself defenceless? Have we not learned? Putin can’t be trusted

Modern tech means all countries are potentially frontline states, in the sense that they can be attacked swiftly. Russia has already threatened to attack us.

And many of our allies (including Ukraine) are frontline states.
November 24, 2025 at 10:33 AM
You may be correct, on the second point but just one potential launch is catastrophic for any country that would act as an aggressor. That’s the deterrent. 1/2
November 24, 2025 at 10:32 AM
We should certainly question our reliance on US technology moving forward, given Trump and the state of the Republican Party in the US.
November 24, 2025 at 10:23 AM
I don’t entirely disagree there, and we will face a big question soon about whether we upgrade our Nuclear deterrent or not. I suspect the Tories, Labour and the Lib Dem’s will favour keeping some form of Nuclear capability, but the cost is a real problem for a country in almost inexorable decline
November 24, 2025 at 10:20 AM
And you do realise the ocean is huge, right? We struggle with tracking Russian surface vessels scouting the edges of our waters.

Question: do you think Russia would have been as likely to attack Ukraine if it had kept its nuclear weapons?
November 24, 2025 at 10:17 AM
We need to increase military spending across the board. And I say that reluctantly.

But spending on arms is much the same as spending on green energy. It’s not just a cost. Jobs and money can be made (though making money from armaments is extremely problematic).

So he does want out? This is not the language we need from someone who wants to lead this country. It undermines us, and our allies at a time when we should be standing shoulder to shoulder with them in the face of a very real threat from Russia. Polanski sounds extremely naive on this issue.
November 24, 2025 at 10:09 AM
I posted a screenshot of their policy (which admittedly doesn’t state officially that they want to leave NATO) so I’m not trying to hide any evidence, am I? So how am I a liar?

And they elected a leader who has stated on more than one occasion that we should leave NATO. It’s Corbyn all over again.
November 24, 2025 at 9:24 AM
I did not lie. Zack Polanski has said on more than one occasion that we should leave NATO

The frontrunner to become the next leader of the Green Party of England and Wales tells Byline Times the UK must now form new alliances for "peace" instead

This is unbelievably naive in the current climate.
November 24, 2025 at 7:49 AM
Zack Polanski has stated that he would like to leave NATO and set up some alternative European organisation. He seems to think NATO isn’t fit for purpose. The written policy predates him and is pretty woolly.
November 24, 2025 at 7:48 AM
Point 1 should be: Russia to return all captured Ukrainian Sovereign territory stolen during the illegal occupation.
November 24, 2025 at 7:19 AM
I’ve said for ages that she is painfully naive. At least, I hope that’s what it is.
