Lettie had been fire and beauty, with perfect societal poise hiding the sharpest tongue. Her silver eyes had sparked with every snipe, and when she’d burst from contempt into fury it had taken everything in him not to tell her what she wanted to know.

Lettie’s chest drew tight as she walked the edge between panic and hysteria. When she glanced back, she saw Mariner on his knees by the fountain, his hands raised in the same pose as Godwin, except he cradled her face instead of a dagger. A shiver tripped along her spine, and she shook her head. Like Mariner had said, it didn’t mean anything.

The wall was covered in mirrors of all shapes and sizes. Harvey let out a low whistle. ‘Not sure what the residence is trying to say with this.’ Lettie blinked at reflection, strewn at least twenty or thirty times across the room. No matter which image she focused on, she appeared drained. Her cheeks were blotchy, and her grey eyes lifeless as a crypt. ‘This won’t do at all,’ she murmured. ‘Would you like me to fix it, ma’am?’ ‘No, it’s good practice,’ Lettie said, pushing the sleeves of her shirt to her elbows.

Protect her. From the moment he’d seen her in the cemetery those words had rung in his ears. But he’d meant what he said to Mariner. He wasn’t the kind of man who could protect anyone, not when the shadows dogged his every step, and a single slip of his grip led to slaughter.

‘I’ll have questions for you too when I return,’ he said, then stepped into the spiral staircase and pulled the door shut behind him. He leaned against the curved wall, relishing the cold of the stone sinking through his suit jacket and shirt. He needed to get back to the scene, and hoped the fresh air alone would clear his head. It was like from the moment he’d seen Lettie on the floor, every one of his senses, including his common one, had fled. He started down the stairs, cursing himself for his stupidity even as he missed the heat of her in his arms

Lettie smiled as she asked; ‘Why do the gods burn the bodies of their mortal loves?’ Mariner slid off her other shoe and raised his head, his sea glass green eyes brightened when they met hers. ‘I’ve answered that question before, love.’ ‘Tell me again.’ ‘Because, burned spirits cannot go to Melene.’ He slid his hands to her hips as he pushed up on his knees. His lips ghosted over hers. ‘And the gods are jealous, possessive creatures.’

Ava squeezed her hands. ‘Not here.’ She turned to Lettie’s side. ‘I assume you introduced yourself.’ Lettie hadn’t felt him follow. She tended to be able to sense the magic on people, but the air in New Lynn was so thick, and she was out of practice. ‘I had to before she set me alight,’ Harvey said. Ava’s eyebrows rose. ‘She didn’t immediately trust you?’ she asked. ‘Gods, you’ll be his favourite now. I won’t hear the end of it.’

Nausea clenched in Lettie’s stomach. It wasn’t unusual for nightmares to make it past the hunters guarding the wastes, but the ones she’d had the misfortune to cross paths with were exactly as their name implied. Nightmares. She couldn’t imagine anyone would want to… the nausea cinched tighter. Likely, the poor woman hadn’t wanted to.

The path narrowed where it rounded a particularly dense cluster of headstones, before widening again as they approached the crypts. Heavy doors were barred with metal slabs, some had candles burning on the steps or fresh laid bowls of smoking herbs. The stronger the witch, the more likely their body would reanimate due to the magic in their bones. Guards lingered amongst the crypts like silent sentinels, dressed in grey and black.

White. Flames lapped her skin, teasing her soulfire to the surface. She floated within the fire, surrounded by the flowing heat. Relaxed, sated. Her consciousness expanded with the warmth. It swirled from her body and tangled with the flames, building, swelling. Her power touched every crag and quarry of Skiila, from the lush grass to the golden fields and a lake filled with stars. It was her world, they were her people, safe and happy within the embrace of the abyss. But it wasn’t enough.

Tliis lifted his face to the warmth of the sun as Wyst adjusted her grip on the edge of a wooden platform. They were out over the abyss. Metal struts across the base roared with soulfire, keeping them afloat. Small islets hung in the air, the spaces between dotted with flaming red and orange gates. Three racers along, Kapsre waved to the crowd. His tawny hair tucked beneath his helmet and eyes shielded by reflective goggles, he was distinguishable by his forest-green riding gear and his golden wyvern. As if sensing Tliis’s gaze, he turned, and a smirk twisted his full lips. He lifted his gloved hand and blew a kiss.

A possible opening for Witchy WIP. I'm really enjoying how hand writing has taken the writing pressure off. If it's not in the word doc it doesn't exist.
Their bodies were found in the courtyard outside of the residence's main entrance. Out of respect, the papers didn't feature a photograph. Somehow, that made the scarce descriptors in the various articles more harrowing.
