Canada Geese come in a variety of sizes. Northern subspecies tend to be smaller.

American Tree Sparrows are cute little birds that overwinter here in Michigan. Sparrows can be hard to tell apart, but the easiest tell for me for these birds is their beak, which is gray on top and yellow on bottom.

A Tufted Titmouse perched in a Tamarack tree. Tamarack trees are the only conifers that shed their needles in the winter, which turn yellow before dropping.

A Red-tailed Hawk that was watching several grey squirrels romping around a nearby tree. The hawk didn't make any hunting attempts and settled back down on the branch.

A Red-tailed Hawk looking for the perfect spot to place the stick in the nest. I am not sure why nesting repair is happening now. One thought is that the amount of sunlight right now is the same of that in the spring, which is triggering some springtime activities.

A Blue Jay perched along the nature trail. Their blue color comes from light scattering through their feathers and reflecting blue wavelengths, not from blue pigment. Blue pigment is rare in nature; this color requires complex molecules that absorb red light, 1/2

On a day where I wasn't seeing much, I decided to head to a spot where I'd seen Brown Creepers in the past in hopes of seeing one. And I did! As they travel up trees, these birds use their tail feathers as a prop, similar to Woodpeckers.

American Wigeons are cute ducks with pale blue beaks, an iridescent green patch on the wings, and the males have a fancy iridescent green noggin stripe and a white cap. These birds are grazers with their stubby beak being ideal for pulling up and eating vegetation.

A Ruby-crowned Kinglet scouting the next spot in the bush to bounce over to. These birds tend to forage lower than the Golden-crowned Kinglets.

I was surprised to see a Sora still around. Most of these marsh birds have migrated, and I imagine this one will very soon with the temps going below freezing at night in the next few days.

A Sandhill Crane fishing in the shallow waters for the roots of aquatic plants to eat. This one found a fishing float and I was concerned the bird would eat it, but luckily the bird discarded it.
