And the worst part is, when Mark is going off into a long tangent about his incredible life experiences, everyone in the room sits around him listening enraptured. He's everything Alex wishes he was but isn't.

Mark is also a guy who loves the sound of his own voice, but his long monologue actually has substance, is actually based on his own experiences as a world traveler as opposed to something he read on the internet. He's also a talented artist, as opposed to Alex who merely parrots better writers.

My theory is that Mark is supposed to show the kind of guy Alex believes he is / aspires to be. Alex is a guy who loves to present himself as intelligent and cultured, who loves the sound of his own voice, who clearly wants to come across as wise and charismatic but fails to be either.
