In New England after a couple of decades in the Pacific Northwest. Still licensing stock images - real people, doing real things, in real places. Now officially an old fart!
"...these policies will give aid and comfort to America’s enemies...shatter the alliances that have made us strong..."

Walking away has a price for the US - who can take America's word for anything? China may take our place and the US will just have to deal with someone else making the rules

"...their wealth and power can gain them anything except respect." After this train wreck that's saving next-to-nothing, Musk & 47 made clear why they get no respect.

I liked your "young DOGE-nik", also @pkrugman.bsky.social 's Muskenjugend; loyal because without dear leader they are nothing.

The breathtaking idiocy of having a hard time undoing their ill-considered firings of Nuclear Security because they couldn't get in touch (because they'd locked them out of their government emails).

It's a "what could go wrong?" attitude of hatchlings with no grasp of the real world

And Collins thought that Trump had learned his lesson . . .

Great reminder that humans are super-smart but seem incapable of learning from past eff-ups.

Webster's observations '...when wealthy people centralize power, “liberty expires” and republican government tends toward oligarchy."'

Tends towards? Musk is running full tilt towards...

That's what my youngest (24) told me :)

But I'm a boomer and I wouldn't install an incandescent bulb under any circumstances! Also have solar panels on the roof.

This isn't a generational thing, it's a dipshit for president thing

. . . Winter for peasants and plebes . . .

i.e. us

Regulations are our major protection from powerful corporations, both as customers and employees

Today I learned about Humpty Dumpty foreign policy; I wouldn't trust us if I were another country - rebuilding broken trust is very, very hard.

Hope you don't get bored of hearing "great blog post" from your readers :)

CFPB was created by Congress, so can't be removed by the Executive, but they can apparently gut it so it's effectively defunct.

Angry citizens cutting off the federal government's incoming funds would be great, but payroll deductions of taxes nix that idea. "No dollars for you!" would be useful...

The watermark says this is a stock image that hasn't been licensed. Not cool

Use your phone and take a picture of a fork or license the work

As always, a very interesting read.

Contents are pretty depressing though. And private equity wants in? They're so destructive to any operation they take over - could regulators prevent PE takeovers of utilities if they could find their spines? Assume that'd be a state by state answer.

Maintaining code is harder than writing new code.

Modifying complex old code only seems simple to egotists who haven’t actually done it

Testing changes to such systems is even more complex, especially when they’re operating 24/7/365

I won’t live long enough to see this sorted out!

Lock Musk out!

A poll he ignores the results of is insulting to the brainwashed hangers-on.

A poll whose results he follows is terrifying for every sane person in the US

On the other hand, if a minion is hacking government computers, do the person's hateful politics really matter?

Digital terrorists.

I loved your old newsletters but Krugman unbound (the new ones) is even better.

The pie chart clarifies so well. And I went to Julien Miguel (You Tube) to learn how to pronounce autogolpe

Today I learned...

It is *not* persecution when you have to follow the same rules as everyone else in the US.

Have any of the cry babies studied the history of religious strife in Europe centuries ago? That was persecution.

Serving non-Christians in your business a problem for you? STFU!

Private equity benefits itself and no one else. The businesses they acquire are loaded with debt - read about dividend recapitalization - and stripped of valuable assets

3-5 years later the PE firm moves on and the hulk is left to struggle (and most don't make it).

Parasites

That was a deeply disturbing (but great) read.

Add that to my current Great Courses lectures on Utopia and Terror (post WWI Europe) and it's clear humans have short memories. We're so smart, but we don't learn from past disasters...

We have donated to Wikipedia for a while; will be increasing the donation this year.

Facts matter. Elon Musk can tantrum and insult Wikipedia but it’s not his, and is not for sale.

Beautifully written piece.

"Those with the direct institutional power to slam the brakes lack the will and those with the will lack the power."

Ouch - we the people are looking so screwed right now...

Cassidy should stop using the M.D. after his name.

He should be ashamed for caving to political concerns and leaving heath issues in such demonstrably incompetent hands (Kennedy)

"...a made up meme agency..." love the phrase; what Musk & minions are doing to civil service workers is a disgrace.

Even a well-handled layoff is incredibly difficult, both for those who go *and* those who remain.

Musk's utter disregard for workers is plain - and vile.

I already subscribe to my local newspaper (& other media). I think it's just hard to watch something you used to feel was a media "home" crumbling...

Have to admire some of SpaceX's achievements, but they need guardrails - i.e. FAA and NASA supervision.

The conflict of interest in having Musk-controlled people inside NASA is enormous - should disqualify them.

We can't permit national assets to be laid waste by this delusional billionaire.
