Annnnd finally, we reach the shallow sea and find out Kelp Forest Mermaid. She has green skin, flowing green hair, and competes with sea otters to gobble up all those pesky sea urchins

Moving up, we find our Open Ocean Mermaid! She evolved alongside whales and sharks, with counter-shading for camouflage, a lot of blubber for warmth, and she even evolved a melon for echolocation! She doesn't need her arms, as she's a filter-feeder like a baleen whale #sciart

Staying in the deep sea, we find our Hydrothermal Vent Mermaid, who has similarly big eyes and reddish skin, with some defensive spikes on her tail. She feeds on chemosynthetic bacteria and thrives in hot, dark places #sciart

What would mermaids look like if they evolved in different parts of the ocean?

First we've got our deep-sea mermaid with her translucent tail, weird long fingers, big eyes and bioluminescent lure #sciart #illustration #comics
