My dog Jeffrey and I saw it on our walk tonight. Gorgeous. Temperature and humidity were great too. Wonderful night to walk. Sometimes Los Angeles is still a glorious place to live.

I also recall hot summers without air conditioning. But we couldn't go to the municipal pool or air-conditioned movie theaters. My mom told us, "It's polio season." We kids knew what polio was. We saw the deformations on the street, in the shops, salespeople at the door as well as in classrooms.

When I was a child I was accustomed to seeing polio crippled classmates in school. It's not something I forget. I hope we don't need that kind of tragedy again for people to be aware of what a preventable disease can cause.
