A critique group is critical. You need to periodically put your work out in the workd--read it out loud, hear how it hits you, and how it hits other people. And you need to stay quiet and listen to the feedback. What your trying to do doesn't matter; does it work does.

I've taught myself to ignore hype around events and holidays billed as "best time of the year" or "best day of your life." Unexpected pleasure is so much better than social pressure pleasure...
