We sat in that small bar, a narrow place with big windows, reading to each other. We became all the people in all the stories. I suppose we knew on some level, if the books weren’t there, it would have turned out that we were two regular people making their way in an uninteresting world.

The clouds thickened and hovered until the rain fell. Fell one by one, drops of rain falling. Falling, drop by drop until there were hundreds of drops falling on their hair.
