I read the first 1/3 and while engaging and informative was so disheartening I couldn't finish.

We do the evo lab as our first lab in second semester majors. Two "yarn" activities- 1) picking 5 diff color yarn up outside (selection) and 2) pulling 2 color yarn out of a paper bag for 6 generations (drift).

I also get them to derive the HWE equation (or try to). With prompting, about 3/4 of student groups get there. I've only been doing this for a bit, but I've noticed better understanding if they've worked out what p and q mean

I introduce selection first, but immediately mention it's not the only mechanism. I don't go into detail on selection until I've laid out the HW conditions (as a null hypothesis). I save HW equations til I've introduced all mechanisms in detail.

Well into the 90s my aunt had a push button phone, but refused to pay the extra $1 a month the phone company wanted for the push button tone. So when you pushed a # it made the rotary clicking sound...

I have the LLbean Baxter St Parka I purchased in 1990 for my first northeast winter. Not quite as waterproof as it was, but still warm

I also wonder about out of state growth for many flagship publics in states without hard caps on % and how this affects the whole landscape

In VA, the smaller 4yr publics (Longwood, Radford) have been shrinking/struggling while UVa, Tech, JMU, VCU steady or growing
December 1, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Do you think any of the increase in 4-yr public is driven by recent grads choosing 4yr over CC, who in the past would have gone to CC? Seems some of the change in VA public institutions has been consolidation of enrollment at our larger public 4 yrs, as smaller public 4 yrs, SLACs and CCs decline

Also good on a cinnamon raisin (or plain) bagel. My kid's convinced me of this recently and I was surprised how good it is!

Is kid at your uni? Curious as to the tenor of the chatter. I try not to eavesdrop on my students, but I often hear amusing discussion of classes they're taking with my colleagues.

Co-worker in my job immediately post college hosted a dinner party and confused clove and head of garlic. The whole workplace smelled of garlic for weeks.

Yeah, my grandmother-in-law in her later years forgot the sugar in the pumpkin pie one year. I had initially passed on the ice cream on top, but after one bite had to say I changed my mind in an effort to eat the whole slice.

The funniest misheard lyrics someone ever told me was a student in a bio class with me who heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Scar Tissue" lyrics as "With the Burgess Shale it's a long way view" which, well.. I've always appreciated for the consistency and commitment to sense making

In college, one of my classmates brought the blue cheese she'd made for her senior microbiology thesis for our seminar snack. She didn't tell us its origins until afterwards! 😀

Book 4 = Why LED lights suck?
October 31, 2025 at 5:26 PM
I'd buy a book about how LED headlights suck!

Thanks! This was great. I'm about to teach the gene reg portion of my sophomore genetics course, and it isn't my specialty but students often ask about these broad questions, so nice to read a bit of history/current state of things.
