Well spotted. That is why we deprecated MMZ many years ago and we now recommend MMZx, that is a ISO19165 compatible format (www.iso19165.org). You can rename a MMZx as a ZIP file and open it. Then you can use GDAL to import what is inside the package into you favorite GIS software.
