Fantastic colloquium at @cern.bsky.social today by @fourform.bsky.social on "The end of measurement and the last lab", part of the ongoing workshop on Quantum Simulation & Computation in HEP (indico.cern.ch/event/1488240).
Bonus: autocorrect mishap leading to the invention of the "axion horoscope".

From KM3Net: "Join us for the announcement of the first major discovery by KM3NeT, the neutrino telescope immersed in the Mediterranean sea." Feb 12, 16:50 CET at www.youtube.com/live/2jgyZlB.... My hope is that this is connected to the stupendously-high-energy neutrino event first reported in 2024.

since everyone is posting sky pics, here's an old one from January 2022, with the inverted shadow of Mont Blanc projected onto the clouds above Geneva, Switzerland.

Reposting this here from the platform that must not be named because it's really cool, literally and figuratively. I've heard several first-hand accounts from people who've spent a winter at the South Pole. A real adventure it seems. And moreover IceCube is one my favorite science projects.

New paper: arxiv.org/abs/2310.19868, with Ivan Esteban and John Beacom.

We argue that a giant star engulfing a neutron star may emit a detectable MeV neutrino signal. Such "common-envelope evolution" is important for enabling binary mergers (GW sources), but has never been observed directly.
