How does the heron feel about swimmers? I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to shoo it off!

At some point - maybe once we're retired- I'm going to make my husband a banyan.

Definitely "very picture-skew" in my family 😄

It's weird (and American) that they have to specify it at all. Do they think someone might confuse it with another White House somewhere else?

Absolutely. The response to the Supreme Court decision should have been to legislate to correct any contradiction in law. In 2008 Parliament clearly intended that a trans-woman should be a woman, and a trans-man a man, for all purposes.

I do love a Rotary Club Santa! They used to come round where I grew up in London. When hubby & I moved out of central Edinburgh and into a house, I was SO excited when the Santa sleigh came round - and they timed it for when we were decorating the tree 🎄

One of my favourites! I wish I could get my choir to do Hark the Herald to Hail the Conquering Hero.

It was always my sister's turn on my birthday, because I had presents to open instead.

Born in London, living in Scotland - half-two, but my mother would object and say it should be half-past two.

Last year we forgot we hadn't changed ours - only discovered in January why we were feeling under-cosy in bed 😮

I feel this should include jelly babies

I remember when ibuprofen became available, when I was a teenager - it was miraculous!

I read this in British, and while I've translated it into American, I still have that picture lingering in my mind...

Like, how??? I saw the original, with Elaine Paige, (yes I'm old) of course she's the lead!

Except that most BrE accents are non-rhotic, so they would have /oʊvə/

That is exactly what it looks like!

It also has a fabulous war memorial - Bruce on his horse with WWI soldiers around him

It was "fox" for me!

I think you've identified the problem - any system that depends on one word sounding like another only works for people with the same accent. "Hook" Vs "boot" is going to confuse my Scottish husband, plus "up" for my Yorkshire friends!
