Birding Anglesey, North Wales coast and further afield.

Bird photos at: https://jmjbirdphoto.myportfolio.com
Shorelark - Great Orme, Llandudno 13/11/25. With the bird reported mid-morning and today giving a brief respite to the poor weather, it seemed now or never. Certainly becoming a rarity on the North Wales coast. #birdingWales
November 13, 2025 at 8:23 PM
Great Northern Diver - Cemlyn, Anglesey 08/11/25. 4 in the bay today, together with 1 Red-throated Diver. With up to 3 at Beddmanarch Bay and 2 at Penmon last week, there has been something of an arrival. Prominent bulge on forehead and dark half collar on neck shown nicely in photo. #birdingWales

Lapland Bunting - male at Cemlyn, Anglesey 08/11/25. Found yesterday, with some speculation that there might be 2 birds present this morning. This bird showed extremely well on the path to the Trwyn. #birdingWales

Lesser Yellowlegs - Inland Sea, Anglesey - mid afternoon 06/11/25. Subject to acceptance by the WBRC, this will become just the 4th record for Anglesey. sites.google.com/view/anglese... #birdingWales

Photo of ELT on the 15/09 for comparison.

Common Ringed Plover: 48 birds at Traeth Dulas this afternoon included 2 colour-ringed birds from a scheme in Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park, Germany. Had ELT back on the 15/09, but the plumage has changed markedly. ELN new. Also 2 Bar-tailed Godwit, 4 Dunlin, 9 Greenshank & 71 Redshank

White-rumped Sandpiper: Malltraeth cob pool, Anglesey 17/10/2025. A wonderful find by David Wright & a big thanks to those who re-found it on the stream entering the cob pool at the Newborogh end. This will either be the 1st or 2nd for Anglesey depending on the deliberations of WBRC. #birdingWales

Lesser Whitethroat - putative Central Asian halimodendri: Porth Meudwy, Gwynedd, 15/10/2025. No DNA or sonogram, but other features from photos including t6 pattern all look supportive.
October 15, 2025 at 8:55 PM
Black Swan - Llyn Padarn, Llanberis 13/10/25. It may be a Category E Escapee, but as I didn't have a photo of a Black Swan I thought that I would take the opportunity presented by what has been a particularly confiding bird. A few birds around NW Wales at the moment.
October 13, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Mediterranean Gull: Traeth Dulas, Anglesey 11/10/25. Adult winter plumage bird (left hand bird) with Black-headed Gulls at high water. Gulls were closer than they usually are at this site, so thought it worth a quick photo - not least to show structural differences between these two species.
October 11, 2025 at 2:41 PM
Mediterranean Gull: Penrhos Coastal Park, Holyhead 08/10/25. Headed off late morning for South Stack area in the forlorn hope of finding an American passerine. Passing over the A5 cob, I noticed that it was high tide & that c 15 gulls were roosting on the shore below the access road - inc 1 Med.
October 8, 2025 at 5:31 PM
Hoopoe - Burwen, Anglesey 06/10/25. A big thanks to Lewi Burgess and his family for both finding this bird and allowing access to their property. The bird was always distant late pm, but it was still great to connect with this bird so close to home. Any day seeing a Hoopoe in the UK is a good day!
October 6, 2025 at 6:38 PM
Pectoral Sandpiper: Cors Ddyga, 28/09/25. Very distant and elusive, but managed a few record shots that should help ease the way for the record as it moves through the Welsh Birds Rarity Committee. Should become only the 24th record for Anglesey. @angbirdnews.bsky.social
September 28, 2025 at 4:37 PM
Glossy Ibis: Gorad Flood, Valley, Anglesey 24/09/25. With so many into Britain, it seemed only a matter of time before we had one locally. First, there was a 2nd hand report of 1 in flight over Cors Ddyga, then confirmation (perhaps the same bird) at the flood. @angbirdnews.bsky.social

Little Stint: At Traeth Dulas, Anglesey 16/09/25. Yesterday's colour ringed Common Ringed Plover was ringed as a chick north of Jade-Weser Port, Wilhelmshaven, Germany (coordinates: 53.5993 N, 8.1259 E) on 18/07/2025. Missed the details on a colour ringed Dunlin from the same scheme this morning.

Common Ringed Plover: Traeth Dulas, Anglesey 15/09/25. Red on left tibia, metal on left tarsus. Yellow darvic, with black inscription ELT on right. Looks to be from a scheme in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea, Germany. Have submitted details. Will update on bird's history once received.
September 15, 2025 at 7:20 PM
Curlew Sandpiper: excellent wader day at Traeth Dulas, Anglesey 15/09/25 with 5 Curlew Sandpiper, a brief Grey Phalarope and what looks like a Common Ringed Plover ringed in Germany. Setting off for a second visit.
September 15, 2025 at 3:51 PM
Booted Warbler: Enjoyed the Field ID notes on Booted & Sykes's Warblers by Andy Stoddart in the Sept '25 issue of Birdwatch magazine. Article references the Great Orme bird of October '16. Dug out one of my old photos (03/10) to examine the stated features against image. Good learning opportunity.
September 12, 2025 at 7:30 PM
Red-necked Phalarope: Cors Ddyga, Anglesey 09/09/25. Subject to acceptance by WBRC, I believe that today's record will be the 5th record of Red-necked Phalarope for Anglesey since 2000 - with birds on the 08/06/06 at Cemlyn, 21/07/20 at Cemlyn, 10/09/22 at Llyn Coron & 26-27/09/23 at Cors Ddyga.
September 9, 2025 at 6:18 PM
Curlew Sandpiper: 4 at Mitigation pool, Inland Sea, Anglesey plus a Ruff & 2 Common Snipe (found by Norman Rowbotham).
September 9, 2025 at 12:48 PM
Little Stint: 2 birds at Malltraeth cob pool - Newborough end this morning. Also 7 Ruff, 11 Black-tailed Godwits, 81 Redshank with an Osprey overhead. Birds are always a little distant for photography at MCP, but the image does highlight the variability in plumage..
September 7, 2025 at 10:55 AM
Little Gull - Llam Carw, Amlwch Port 30/08/25. Encouraged by a few good seawatching records by others, I checked out the bay at Amlwch Port. Found this Little Gull close to the rocks until a Black-headed Gull decided to have a go for it. Bird lingered on sea between former Octel site & East Mouse.
August 31, 2025 at 12:04 PM
Greenshank - Traeth Dulas, Anglesey 09/08/25. 4 birds present yesterday 9th and today. Birds spread across Brickworks pool, river & estuary. 4 Redshank yesterday - up to 8 this evening. 1 Whimbrel - 9th. 3 Mediterranean Gulls - 9th &10th - but some exchange of birds - new juvenile present tonight.
August 10, 2025 at 8:12 PM
Green Sandpiper - 1 on old brickworks pool & then river, Traeth Dulas 23/07/25. Also 2 Common Sandpiper (1 pool, 1 river), 3 Greenshank (1 pool, 2 river), 4 Redshank (river) and 2nd calendar year Mediterranean Gull in high tide roost on saltmarsh.

Common Tern (colour ringed) - colour ringed Sandwich Terns can be difficult enough to photograph, so was pleased that I was able to capture a clear photo of White P87 at Cemlyn this evening 19/07/25 which should be from a scheme in Dublin Bay. Reported.
