It’s also a bit weird to me that people would devote so much energy to running background checks on other posters; it seems to me that it would be better just to judge on what people actually say and do on the platform. People can block for whatever reason they want, but this seems a bit limiting.

Seems to me that anyone who would block you because you once wrote for a site they object to are probably fine to not have in your timeline. Seems like that would be their loss, since they would miss out on your views, which, agree or disagree, are argued cogently, earnestly and without malice.
