The 9/11 memorial was visible from my apartment last night.

A friend pointed out that if I do forty-nine more of these, I'll have covered -- okay, "covered" -- the entire Torah, and in under an hour!

Anyway! This week's Torah portion in under sixty seconds.

Today, Jewish summer camps are thriving -- some studies suggest more than 40% of American Jews attend them.

And they reflect the full diversity of American Jewish life. You have your Reform camps, your Orthodox camps, your Conservative camps...

Jewish summer camps were conceived in America in the early 20th century -- an effort to instill Jewish heritage in kids growing up in the New World, and a response to antisemitism, as many camps barred Jewish children.

Last weekend, I took my oldest daughter to Jewish summer camp. I was all kinds of sentimental about it.

She was not.

A #Jewish thread.

Tomorrow on The Wondering Jew, we’re heading to Jewish summer camp.

Ida Applebroog’s “I will go before thee and make the crooked places.” Isaiah 45:2

Applebroog (1929–2023) grew up in an Orthodox family in the South Bronx. A highly influential figure within the art world, she was known for her haunting, unsettling, and deceptively simple works.

All these years later, marijuana retains a place in Jewish culture.

Some of the earliest public advocates for marijuana legalization were Jews.

And brands like Tokin' Jew sell kosher-certified edibles... as well as menorah-shaped bongs!

In 2020, archeologists excavating an ancient Judaic temple in the Negev desert found something surprising on one of the altars:

The burned residue of cannabis.

Yes, it seems at least some of our ancient forebears were getting high.

Judaism has a long and evolving relationship with substances that alter the mind. On Tuesday, The Wondering Jew explores the Jewish approach to marijuana.

You might be surprised how far back the relationship might go.

But then imagine if two thousand years after America’s destruction, there were still millions of Americans all over the world, celebrating the 4th of July and arguing over what Thomas Jefferson meant by “the pursuit of happiness.”

That's the analogous situation for the Jewish people.

Imagine if the United States was conquered by a foreign power, Washington, D.C. was burned to the ground, and every American was forced to leave the country for the next two thousand years.

It can be hard to communicate -- certainly via Bluesky -- what a cataclysm the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE by the Romans was for the Jewish people.

But think of it this way...
