Also, Thanksgiving was a very patriotic holiday for much of the time the Civil War was within living memory. For example, here are some Thanksgiving cards from the turn of the nineteenth century.

Funny, because I'm gluten intolerant but sometimes bake gluteny gifts, and when I do I'm always mildly surprised by the texture.

So, what exactly is it that makes anyone in the US think that Ukrainians should feel any differently about it than we would? And how can anyone in the US have so little self-awareness to believe Ukraine would see a 'land for peace' option as any more viable than anyone in the US would?

Ukraine was invaded in an unprovoked attack. There have been unending attacks on Ukrainian soil for years at this point. Had anything similar happened to the US, a very vocal contingent of people would have been advocating for the use of (more) nukes from the beginning.

Quite simply put, an attack on US soil is as close to "unforgivable" as this country can get, and even things that are ultimately forgiven aren't forgotten.

The national memory is strong enough that when the US and Japan wished to express their reconciliation decades later, they arranged a ceremony in which a Japanese dignitary laid a wreath at the Pearl Harbor memorial.

One of the history books I read stated that the bombs used to attack Pearl Harbor were manufactured in Nagasaki. I have no way of knowing if that was true or not but reading that and knowing people at the time believed it certainly gave me pause.

One protestor was carrying a sign inscribed with "Remember Pearl Harbor!" I thought to myself at the time that that score had been settled a LONG time ago, and most Americans would agree. But Japan had to go through really a lot before we did decide that score was settled.

But to really get an idea of this, you need to go back to the "day that will live in infamy." Once, when I lived in San Francisco, Shinzo Abe (then PM of Japan) came to visit. A group had assembled outside of the hotel he was staying at to protest various Japanese policies.

If there had been a clearly identifiable state actor, there would've been very little domestic opposition to going after it with everything we had.

Then there was the response to the actual attack on US soil that occurred on 9/11. The inchoate rage was palpable – and the only reason it remained inchoate was because there was no clear target for it.

Even very small incursions will provoke a furious response. Thinking back to the drones that Romania found in 2023 - if that had happened in the US, we quite simply would've flipped, at least judging from the furor over the Spy Balloon.
