“When I ask you a question, Kathian, you will answer.” “You fucking killed her!” The words shot out of them before they could even consider their wisdom. In their mind’s eye, they saw the way he’d looked as he’d done it, like it was nothing. “A necessity, one you wouldn’t understand. Nor will I explain it to you.” Another vampire approached him with a bowl in his hands and held it out. Marenso washed the blood off, then dried his hands, though the cuff of his shirt sleeve was still stained red. At last he turned back to them, an eyebrow raised. Their voice was smaller once they found it again. “She was one of your kind, though. A vampire. You killed one of your own?” “Mortals have killed plenty of other mortals across the centuries. I don’t know why you think it’s so unusual when we do it.” How could he be so cold about it? “Bransen, would you care to explain this interruption of my business?”

There are cities in the world where you can chant about fanged superiority, or however you put it, but mine is not one of them.” “Fuck your rules. Vampires are meant to be free. We’re meant to be the predators mortals fear.” He wanted to roll his eyes at the ignorance, but such childishness was beneath a man of his age. “We are more free now than we ever were in the past, but I don’t expect a young vampire like yourself, who knows nothing about life before the Rising, to understand.”

A woman’s contralto voice sliced through the silence. “You might as well come out, mortal. Even if I hadn’t seen you on the security cameras, I can smell you all over this room.” Kathian stayed where they were, but cursed the rushed mission. As much as they’d wanted to do this, they’d expressed their concerns to Demitrea and her deputy, Harran, that it was too soon, that no one knew enough about the warehouse. And her insistence on doing it at night, when vampires would be around, had been lunacy. They hated being right, especially after both had assured them it would be fine. This was not fine. It was the same thing those two did every time Kathian raised a concern about their nephew, Demitrea and Harran’s son, Gilen. Dismissing them, overruling them without actually listening to their point. And now it was going to get Kathian killed. At least there was nothing on them that would lead back to the resistance movement their sister led, and their nephew. Her idea to leave behind everything except their clothes had been a good one. “Fine. If you want to do this the hard way, I can hunt you down. It’s not like you can get past me.”

Oliver loves fall because snuggling is more comfortable once it cools off. So he’s snuggling even more than usual. This is definitely not a complaint.

Oliver has a very almost kitten-y squeak, like his voice never dropped (he’s 10, so this won’t ever change). He’s been squeaking at me a bunch so I called him the Squeaker of the House.

“And the reason she brought me in is?” “Lord Marenso will explain that to you,” the taller, black man said. “We’re taking you to see him once you’ve gotten changed.” The white vampire tossed a bag to Kathian. They left it where it fell on the bed, too terrified to even move. But they held their voice steady as they said, “I’ll pass.” He sighed. “Look, there are three ways this can go, Kathian. One is you cooperate and get changed. Two is you don’t cooperate, we take pity on you and stuff you in those clothes. That one will probably hurt, mostly because I’m fairly sure you’ll try to fight us. And three, you refuse and we take you before our lord naked, your clothes torn apart. No one will enjoy that option.” Least of all Kathian. They nearly threw up at the idea of being that exposed in front of anyone, much less strangers, or worse, the most dangerous vampire in the whole city. “I’m going to pick option four. I go in the clothes I’m wearing and you can tell Marenso it’s my fault.” “Lord Marenso. You’ll show him proper respect, mortal,” the taller man growled. The shorter one said, “That’s the least trouble, Erik, and it means we won’t risk hurting him,” “Them,” they snapped. “Excuse me,” the shorter one asked. “I’m not a man, whatever assumptions you’ve made.” The doctor spoke up then, startling Kathian, who had forgotten her. “Oh, non-binary?” They shook their head. “Agender. So we have a deal, since I can’t keep you from dragging me out of here?”

“Do I look like I wear fancy clothes of any variety, masculine or feminine? Do I strike you as someone who likes things like this? Layers and embroidery and ruffles and lace?” The money spent on the first wardrobe had floored them. Even without being able to price it all out, they knew it was enough to keep the resistance afloat for months, perhaps even years. And now even more had been spent. Just so Kathian would dress up for Marenso. That. That was the real issue. “Do I seem like someone who intends to cooperate with you vampires, on this or any other point?” “I could still make good on my threat to stuff you into one of these outfits,” Bransen said, and his fraying politeness felt like a victory to Kathian. “You wouldn’t, and for the same reason you didn’t in Medical. I will fight you if you try and then I’ll end up hurt and you’d have to explain that to your boss.” “Lord Marenso-” “I don’t care what he or any of you want. I’m not going along with this so-called life you’re trying to force me into.” Bransen reeled back from the force of their denial, then glared at them, fists clenched. He waved to the staff members, all waiting while Kathian was in their way. They turned around and left, Bransen on their heels. He slammed the apartment door shut behind him. Kathian felt like they’d won, even if it was temporary. As a reward, they sat on the couch, kicked their shoes off and started reading a romance novel that had piqued their interest in the library.

“That’s what you were talking about, when you said I didn’t understand. Their attitude, the way they’d treat me.” “I’m sorry. I truly am. But that’s part of it, yes. Vampires even older than me will be there, ones who’ve lost any connection they might have had to the mortals they were born as.” They put one hand to their temple, and it was shaking badly. “You’re not like him. Or them.” “I try not to be. I can’t maintain this city’s peace well if I lose that entirely. But enough of that. Of me. Come.” He took their hand and led them away. Kathian followed him without complaint as he went down a side street, and into a doorway in an alley. It was the best he could do for privacy without going back home, and Kathian couldn’t wait, not even for a car to come get them. Not in their current state. Their heart raced in his ears and distress carved lines into their face. “Just breathe, Kathian.” He pulled them around to face him, and put his hands on their shoulders. “Put it out of your mind for a moment and breathe. Let your heartbeat slow and and calm flow into you.” They did as he instructed, their green eyes looking up into his. They’re close to my height, he thought distractedly. It would be so easy to… No, this was not the time for anything but making sure they were okay. That worrying look, like they were going to be sick, was almost entirely gone now. The trembling was subsiding. They were going to be fine. Well, perhaps not fine, but they were recovering from the encounter and that was what mattered. “Thank you for coming out with me tonight” He wasn’t aware he was going to say it until the words came out of his mouth.
