Purchased a hard copy of the US constitution in Lexington, MA today. Given all the crazy stuff that’s happening in the world, it feels strangely comforting to own a copy that I know no one can change.

In theory, realizing this vision is technically possible, but the prospect of doing so is under existential threat. Without basic science funding, researchers will be unable to continue this work and progress will grind to a halt. It is tempting to think that there is a clean distinction between science and politics. On paper, science is an objective pursuit of truth whereas politics is corrupted by subjective beliefs, desires, and competing, mutually exclusive interests. In reality, science exists as it does today because democratically elected politicians made it a priority and were convinced of its benefits to society. Because this was generally the case for nearly a century, it has been easy to take this situation for granted and come to the conclusion that science and politics could reside in hermetically sealed spheres of influence. As much as this dissertation is intended to be a culmination of previous work completed over the course of a 5-year PhD, it is also a clarion call to you, the reader, to recognize that the future of scientific innovation cannot be divorced from the political will to sustain it. Just as democratic decisions historically catalyzed scientific progress, so too must they now confront the escalating threats to its survival. This dissertation, while rooted in rigorous academic inquiry, serves as both a product of that system and a witness to its fragility—a dual identity reflecting the reality that truth, in the end, is not immune to the forces that shape the world beyond the lab.
