From today’s Guardian. Quite so.
The British civil service was designed to run an empire, not to serve working people. Its purpose was to rule over people as subjects, not serve them as citizens. It was built to command and control. Clever people with the right sort of education who knew the decisions they made were better. Brains at the centre, obedience at the edge. Endless statistical knowledge, precious little experience on the ground.

August 14th is the worst day for me as it’s the day when my brother took himself out of this world. 17 years later it still hurts acutely. Love to everyone else he left behind - look after yourselves. X

60 P tell me the truth about life Joanne Limburg (b. 1970) Steve Silberman (author, academic) writes: The Alice Cave ina brilliant representation of the surreal predicament that auticie adults like Limburg find themselves in when their identities are reduced to mere checklists of deficits and dysfunctions by the medical establishment. I love how Limburg uses the line breaks to intensify the feeling of Alice being under relentless assault, cloaked in the condescending language of diagnosis, and particularly admire the way that Alice herself suddenly and awkwardly appears in a conversation about her, which parallels the emergence of the adult autistic community in the 1990s, when they began demanding representation in the public conversation about autism. The Alice Case "The problem with Alice', the Caterpillar says, "is her rigidity of thought." "Yes', says Humpty Dumpty, "and her lack of empathy?' "Indeed', says the Caterpillar. 'Her mind-blindness.' 'Yes', says Humpty Dumpty. "Her inability to read faces.' "Indeed', says the Caterpillar. "Or tone of voice?' 'the fight was fixed' And then, says Humpty Dumpty, there's the flatness of her affect.' Alongside', says the Caterpillar, the strangeness of her prosody? This is the book of mine that seems to be the least visible. That may partly reflect my ambivalence about it - it’s about suicide grief and I’ll never be 100% sure that it’s right to tell the family story that led up to it.
