Last week I joined our Master of Landscape Arch students at the Stone Quarry Art Park to lead a guest workshop on creating Winogradsky columns.

We did ab overview of microbial metabolism (using human metabolism as a grounding framework) and followed by using gathered materials to create columns.

Turns out, these genes aren’t just about tellurium! They’re also involved in:

-antibiotic resistance 💊
-virulence 🦠😷
-oxidative stress response 💥
-metal homeostasis 🪨

But the literature was so far-flung that it’s hard to stumble upon! So we synthesized it for you!

Got to spend the weekend at ESF’s Cranberry Lake campus in the Adirondacks!

Finally we did a little preview of the Winogradsky column exercise that we will all do together at the art park in two weeks! Everyone was super interested to learn more about the different microbial metabolisms that are seen in the column and strategies for designing the column.

Stay tuned!

Next, we talked about how environment shapes microbiata. I used our local meromictic lake as an example. We also talked about microbiomes of different urban green spaces and then microbial responses to environmental gradients (soil moisture, slope aspect, and soil compaction specifically). 🧵

First, practical links between LA and microbiology. Giving them ideas to marinate on for their studio project, which requires them to develop microbe-related interventions at the site to highlight microbial processes to the visiting public. 🧵

Today was my first lecture for the MLA students in this studio. First, I want to emphasize that this bunch was SO EXCITED to talk about microbiology and how the field links to their professional interests. Such an engaged audience and they asked fantastic questions. So what did we talk about? 🧵

Excited to share some of my new project with a landscape arch. prof at ESF, Jean Yang, that explores the intersection between microbial ecology and design! We are piloting a grad level MLA studio. The students will be implementing microbe-related interventions at Stone Quarry Art Park.

I’m looking for classic papers in biochemistry for my Biochem I class this fall!

Any suggestions are appreciated!

We cover nucleotide structure and function; central dogma; protein structure and function; enzymology; and lipid structure and function.

Mountain pic for attention.

When you start online antique shopping but then to decide to save money by channeling that energy into claiming items for your lab off of the college’s surplus exchange system

(Unclear if a 15 plug power strip will accidentally burn down the lab)

Going away celebration for one of my OG lab members, Chan, as she returns home to Thailand after graduating with her BS from ESF!

(currently planning a spring break trip for 2026 to Thailand to visit her and colleagues at her home university in Thailand)
