Love this.

RFK Jr.'s attitude towards those clinically diagnosed with autism, which strikes me as part of a bigger worldview, is so, deeply, wrongheaded. That's what we need to save the world from: wrongheaded beliefs and ideologies. Neurodivergence !== tragedy.

Wow. I understand how low the chances are this half-ton spacecraft will hit a populated area, but also… there's no reason it couldn't. It's *exactly* like the subplot in Megalopolis — spookily so. Designed to survive intact through atmospheric entry. 🛰️

Watching Mulholland Dr. after 4th failed attempt this week to see Sinners.

Mood, image, and mystery are superlative. Can't grasp how Lynch was able to reformulate The Wizard of Oz into this adult neonoir thriller, like a telescope pointed at Hollywood itself. The artistic level he was working at… 🤯

Super impressed by The Last Showgirl (and annoyed there was apparently no distribution in Spain). Reminds me of an indie style that would come out reliably, a handful per year. Pam Anderson, Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis? All great performances. And the direction has a unique voice. These Coppolas. 🍿

‘Los años nuevos’, the recent miniseries by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, is phenomenal. A mix of social realism and Spanish melodrama at its finest, and about the most authentic and deep representation of Spanish culture you can get. *Muy recomendable* 🇪🇸🍿

Very cool. It'll feel stupid to have entertained the idea life couldn't exist on other planets.

“We have demonstrated that it is possible to detect biosignatures in potentially habitable planets […] We have entered the era of observational astrobiology,”

Scientists find strongest evidence yet of life on an alien planet
In a potential landmark discovery, scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have obtained what they call the strongest signs yet of possible life beyond our solar system, detecting in an alien planet's atmosphere the chemical fingerprints of gases that on Earth are produced only by biological processes.

Rewatched Bowling For Columbine. It holds up ridiculously well—in fact I think it's a better portrait of US society now than on release, when it was fresh and compelling. If I get my writing fingers tapping soon, it's high on my list 🍿 #GoodRewatch

I really want a leader to be invited to the White House and not wear shoes or socks just as bait to deliver this line.

What a great movie (The Birdcage) 😂

Latest episode of Andrew Hickey's podcast, on The Beach Boys, is 💯 – been on a deep dive for days, and can't believe how much music of theirs I was unaware of.

Top finds: Sunflower, Holland, Love You, Surf's Up, and Dennis Wilson's solo album, Pacific Ocean Blue.

Saw A Complete Unknown. It takes some liberties, but I think all in the name of telling a good story that captures the right elements, energy, and spirit. Simply an excellent biopic, *packed* with music and excellent performances. As good as Walk the Line, and maybe better 🍿👍👍

RIP Gene Hackman. Absolute mountain on the screen. And I admire his decision to retire when he did. Good innings ❤️

Wow. Those are right there with once-in-a-lifetime, independence referendum turnout numbers.

Merz's priority to break reliance on the US sounds sensible. He'll need to deliver real change.

Occurred to me earlier today that Donald Trump is literally looking at the world map, seeing how big Russia looks on it, and thinking "how can we make the USA even bigger?" So Canada, Greenland, rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as an extension of “US territory.” Idiocracy ✅

Saw The Brutalist. Man, that's a big movie! Feels properly big on the big screen. And it's cool having an intermission. Some critiques, but it's not a movie you're likely to regret going to see 🍿

And a note to cinemas: turn the damn sound up! You can pay the electricity when the house is near-full.

… It's always morphing and subject to change and I like it that way, but my current top three being:

1. Bringing It All Back Home
2. Another Self Portrait
3. Rough and Rowdy Ways

Re-listening to Rough and Rowdy Ways for the first time in a while and it couldn't sound better.

The album is one of the most surprising and positive energies I find memorable from the pandemic. Bound to always be in my top three Dylan albums.

David Lynch. This piece does a good job of capturing it. To me Twin Peaks: The Return and also, how he posted to YouTube every day during the pandemic both felt like gifts. Things we had no right to expect, but got. He was the greatest living artist ❤️ RIP

Enjoyed *MoviePass, MovieCrash (2024)* very much. The basic idea of getting people in the cinema through subscription loyalty, while maintaining box office performance as a core metric, was great. Much of “once something shows promise, predators move in…” Engrossing story 🍿
