If you are in Northern NJ and/or the greater NY Metro region this holiday season, come check out the Garden State Model Railway Club's annual Holiday Shows starting the last weekend in November!

We have two HO Scale layouts, including one under construction!

Hope to see you there!

Built April 1918 at Baldwin. Up until December 1941, she was Erie Railroad J-2 Class No. 2499. The low stepped running boards toward the pilot are a trademark (although not a consistent one) of the Erie's Russian Decapods.

Here she is at some point in her Erie days, sporting a high headlight.

It's a building I really want to go visit one day 🙏

Scenes from the last two nights... setup with the Ops Chair for our model railroad club's next op session.

At my club, NYSW 142's headlight decoration had spurred some interesting conversations.

So I whipped up a complete fictional railroad.

Have some logos, possible reporting marks, and drumheads. (Didn't do a paint scheme, but I figure "boiled crustacean" red is key)

Go crab wild with it! 🦀🦞🚂

Of course, being a Rapido product, it comes pre-loaded with fun sounds on the sound decoder!

Erie No. 26 takes it's first steps on the club's test track.

This was my major purchase at the Timonium Show last weekend, and is the one GE 44-tonner I'll ever need*.

(*I would like to acquire the M&U/M&NJ and NYO&W locos in due course though!)

An unstreamlined C&O L1 Hudson, with centered headlight and Franklin Type A rotary valve gear (as seen on 494 below), is a mood and I am all here for it.

UP did run their Office Car Special over Horseshoe Curve back in 2018.
(and then ultimately ran the train up to Harriman, NY)

From yesterday, here's a shot of NYSW 142 in action.

Forget mounting antlers or eagles on top of a steam locomotive headlight.

Crabs are where it's at. 🦀

Very cool! If one of these were rolling by in a consist, it wouldn't even register as something out of the ordinary to me.

I'm amazed that there are three of these things preserved!

Wacky yet neat combination Boxcar and Covered Hopper!

More info on the two cars used by the Milwaukee Road and BC Rail in joint service in the attached image!

You need to do the thing and make this kitbash into a 1:1 scale reality.

We were close! The L&HR had three copies, numbered 10, 11, and 12, built in 1944. They saw six (6!) years of service before being scrapped. No. 12 received an overhaul in 1950, but was never fired up again. There was allegedly interest by other RRs in purchasing them, but nothing came from it.

Despite no connecting trains at Denville (due to a derailment East at Summit), I understand the Boonton Scoot service was rather well patronized!

Power on the 12:50 Scoot back to Denville had NJT #4210 (The Erie Railroad Heritage Unit aka The Best Heritage unit) as power.

NJT was running their "Boonton Scoot" shuttle train between Denville and Boonton (which doesn't get weekend trains) just for the event.

First train to Boonton had NJT #4101 (The NJDOT Heritage Unit) as power.

Most Unexpected thing were the Disco-Stripe colored curtains in CNJ Blue Comet Observation Car "DeVico"... which may be the closest IRL equivalent to the NJT Pride Flag Meme

The most relevant to my modeling interests were Erie Railroad No. 436 (an EMD SW9) and Erie Railroad Crane No. 03125 (Bucyrus 160T)

The Milwaukee Zoo's railroad would have been the last place I would expect to see any application of the Erie Railroad's post-1951 two-tone green paint scheme, winged diamond and all.

As an Erie RR fan, I'm not complaining, but I'm genuinely curious as to why the zoo chose that paint scheme.
