Yes, it genuinely is a case of two countries divided by a common language. If Americans spoke any other language, it would be much easier for Brits to perceive how different they actually are - culturally and politically.

Were things better 50 years ago, or was the average telegraph reader just in their 20s back then, in this study I will…

Eesh. Add in inflation and that’s what, effectively a 25ish decline in value of Prem tv right?

“One had indeed personally to come under the shadow of war to feel fully it’s oppression; but as the years go by it seems now often forgotten that to be caught in youth by 1914 was no less hideous an experience than to be involved in 1939…By 1918 all but one of my close friends were dead.” JRRT

There is a massive issue with subbing at the BBC generally, particularly on areas they clearly care less about (Rugby Union etc). You’d think at least for the Politics stuff though some care might be applied!

He also clearly cannot comprehend there is a *reason* the abode of a President of a republic doesn’t look like a palace…

Agree. Didn’t mind the old Conan-y ones but these make a lot more sense thematically!

I would add that the Kings also (largely) learned a lesson from that - it’s generally not great for their career prospects to horde all the ways you can get blamed…

Interested to hear how it goes!

Yes! hopefully would also mean less models that have spent weeks painting getting killed on turn one every game, and open the door to more troop types being effective. E.g ultra elite could still have ability to go squad by squad in some circumstance but guard etc would be very much mass firepower

In 40k, to speed it up and add a tactical layer I would love to playtest (a) all attacks allocated at start of turn, then all resolved simultaneously (b) initiative or leadership test required to shoot at anything other than nearest enemy unit

That the diaspora minister would have the temerity, at this moment above all, tells you everything you could possibly want to know about the bottomless cynicism of the Likudniks.

Men would rather use their last shreds of consciousness to hold back the endless terrors of the warp than go to therapy.

This VDV cosplay would have made a bit more sense a few years ago, before they got themselves all killed by the Kyiv 103rd Accountants brigade etc

He was very strange as undergrad by all accounts. Media ecosystem has a lot to answer for. Old Tel blog editors used to think he was mad, we’re amazed/ horrified by the clicks he got. Now the whole Tel Opinion section reads like him

Nowhere near 1.5 million. Much smaller than the Gaza and anti-Brexit marches. Been in London all day, large parts of it you wouldn’t even know a march was happening

Quite. I dimly recall Spiegelman makes this point in Maus.

When I was a young idiot new to work I would also offer my unsolicited, ignorant opinions. Thankfully the wiser heads were kind enough to educate me without being too unkind. I think an eternal thing.

How much is the prevalence of this idea just people looking up the shareholders of developers/ landlords and seeing the big index shop names?

@walterolson.bsky.social from a very different side of the political aisle from you, just wanted to thank you for standing up for what you believe in.

I wonder if in a strange way it’s the professionalism. Iron desire to win, in a sport that prefers to valourise the gallant loser. Cipriani for example allowed a wealth of second chances in the public eye.

Great post. US always feels a place there is more opportunity and more cruelty than the UK. The UK increasingly feels like the Theme Park in Barnes’ England, England. The proliferation of “Harry Potter” and “American Candy” shops is particularly bad for the sense of civic torpor.

Agree. Without Bell or Valentini in particular they are really lacking physicality. Strange to see Wilson so subdued as well. Lions should really run the score up here…
