I suspect this is part of their plan from the beginning, but this election really scared them. They will be keeping a very close eye on the areas most likely to flip back to blue, and they will disenfranchise those voters as much as possible. SCOTUS will also likely destroy mail-in voting.

This is Republicans attempting to 'take one for the team', as a way to justify Trump sending the military into blue states to seize control and prevent fair elections. If they can pretend they're stopping crime in red states too, they think they can get away with their move to totalitarianism.

I am hoping the next sane administration in office hands Trump and all his enablers over to The Hague to be tried for war crimes. That's the only thing that can help the US come back from this and gain any trust again.

If any other president had "heaped pressure" on SCOTUS to rule his way he would have been ripped to shreds and impeached. But now we're in some bizarro alternate universe where both Congress and SCOTUS are getting on their knees for the creep in the Executive office. Something is very, very wrong.
