Which is great particularly for primary care, but do you want your best trained anesthesiologists to strictly do screening colonoscopies and save the big cancer resections, etc. to those that have to take jobs that don’t fully reimburse? The proposed policy is misaligned with medical reality, imo

Fair but my understanding of anesthesia billing is that it is in general better financially to do a high volume of short cases; long amounts of case time is less efficient. Should we incentivize doctors to only do short, “easy” cases? Cost shaving in healthcare is challenging

You’re talking rationally and reasonably. No one trusts an insurance company to do anything other than maximize its own profits. Hence the widespread, deserved skepticism

I’m not implying there aren’t bad actors out there. But the proposed policy was poorly concealing Anthem’s cost shaving to the benefit of no one but themselves. Anesthesiologists can’t control surgery length. If you wanted to set a standard delta of surgery and anesthesia time that’s different

I suppose I’m more inclined to believe a single insurance company is acting in unison to shave expenses and increase profits than I am inclined to believe thousands of anesthesiologists across the country with no working relationship are all in cahoots and systematically overbilling together

If you have ever had surgery you’d know you can’t safely instantly go to sleep and immediately have surgery and then immediately after surgery is complete wake up fully emerged from anesthesia. It isn’t a Light switch

And malpractice attorneys much less
