Another #233words tonight. (Actually more like 280)

Over 1000 words in four days.

Writing in short, manageable chunks, fifteen to twenty minutes a day.

Another #233words yesterday (more like 300). Hoping for more tonight to break the 1000 in four days.

Really interesting, writing in short sharp bursts. A different way of moving through the narrative.

At school, he learns the history of medicine.

Black bile. Yellow bile. Phlegm. Blood.

He recites a rhythm of sickness, words which reached for truth, which missed, which pointed the way.

Now, he knows what words are for.

He writes. He gets things wrong.

And all his words are clues.

We would sit, back then, you at the piano, I with my paper.

You never played anything much. Single notes, here and there. Deliberate and gentle.

Better than words.

The silence between each finger-stroke is where we lived.

Loved there, too, I still believe, despite everything.

The heart is not what he knows it to be.

Not red. More a muddy brown. Purple and blue.

Slick. Hard. Soft in places. The shape of it not that shape he knows. No smooth curves, no simple point.

A mass, a mess, a lump, a pump.

Blood and oxygen.

Hope, and the promise of death.

A small wooden bridge over a slow stream. Unloved, functional, another sad thing under the blue sky.

Old enough.

Younger than the stream. Younger than the trees. Younger than the slow blue sky.

Another sad thing, and the stream flows.

Another sad thing, and the blue of the sky.

This is such a great piece of advice from @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com self

Too many short stories read like the FIRST chapter of a novel, full of exposition, lacking tension.

Find where the thing that matters happens in your story, and write that bit.

😎

Write the last chapter of the novel and call it a short story.

Alongside some other reading I've been dipping in and out of this - introducing me to lots of new writers, with notes on the authors from one of my favourite writers, Jhumpa Lahiri.
