And because you asked (you didn't), here's a bit of students talking about hot pants and bellbottoms with backwards funk wailing in the background. (I think this is an effect of 4-track tape on a 2-track player?) Anyway this is my obsession now.

...but then on another track someone was putting together a mixtape of the *hottest* funk and soul of the mid-70s. In what now feels like a strange cosmic omen, the first song I landed on was "The Black Five" by the great Roy Ayers, who passed away a couple days later.

Please also note that in 2020 he released a calypso protest song calling Donald Trump an "unhinged scoundrel" who was "gonna kill us all." What I'm saying is, David Johansen rules.

Thanks to him, the New York Dolls are always shouting "Trash! (Go pick it up!)" in my head every time someone mentions trash, and the way he says "Ni-yagra Fawwls" is similarly perma-lodged in my brain.
