He resorted to borrowing money from friends and former unit members, and during the conversation, he broke down in tears from frustration and desperation, his unit mate said. “Every time, like looking [for] somebody [to] help for documents, somebody [to] help for pay the rent, he’s not going to work,” the Afghan unit mate said. His unit mate said Lakanwal sought help in June from a CIA program designed to aid Zero Unit veterans with immigration issues. Rolling Stone reviewed a screenshot of the group chat in June where Zero Unit veterans shared information with a CIA representative about ongoing issues. Lakanwal posted messages asking for help. His last post went unanswered and was deleted by the chat’s administrator.

Unclaimed bodies can’t consent at all, and the use of unclaimed bodies in medical education is widely considered unethical. “We all know better. You have to have consent for this,” said a Keck physician who is not involved in the program but brought the documents to Annenberg Media’s attention. The physician, who declined to be identified out of fear of losing their job, said the Navy facility “wasn’t designed or developed to save lives. It was just to desensitize people to the trauma.”

History will not be kind to this moment. A ceasefire plan that excludes the occupied is not a peace plan. It is a colonial diktat - the language of mandate and tutelage revived for the 21st century. It is the same conceit that promised away Palestinian land in their absence, without their consent, in the Balfour Declaration of 1917. Mandates, protectorates, trusteeships - all the euphemisms of empire are recycled to deny Palestinians their voice.

The headlines suggest that Medicare will largely be untouched. But that turns out to be untrue. First of all, as my colleague David Dayen has reported, the budget deficits from the reconciliation bill trigger mandatory spending cuts that will hit Medicare to the tune of around half a trillion dollars over a decade. But Trump’s HHS is also rolling out a program that will use private vendors armed with AI tools to require preapproval of procedures before Medicare will pay for them. The program will initially be launched as a pilot in six states: New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Washington.

More than a century and a half ago, this country ignored the explicit words of men who sought to raise an empire of slavery. It subsequently transformed those men into gallant knights who sought only to preserve their beloved Camelot. There was a fatigue, in certain quarters, with Reconstruction—which is to say, multiracial democracy—and a desire for reunion, to make America great again. Thus, in the late 19th century and much of the 20th, this country’s most storied intellectuals transfigured hate-mongers into heroes and ignored their words—just as, right now, some are ignoring Kirk’s.

The bill, in all its legislative prose, does not cite any specific project. However, a state senate analysis calls the gondola proposal “one project that would benefit.” Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), the bill’s author, said he had not met with any of the lobbyists from the McCourt entities registered to do so. Wiener said he included the gondola-related language in the bill at the request of legislators from the Los Angeles area. “To me, it was a no-brainer,” Wiener told me.
