Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a bike.
What? When I’m in the opposite carriageway and there's plenty of room for everybody? The barriers are over what’s usually a taxi rank. It’s come to a pretty pass when Surrey’s roadworks are signed better than Outer London’s.

Using the 0-200 count section in the Blackfriars pedestrian-cycleway crossing video, I can’t verify the claim that over ¾ of riders meeting a red light ride through it*, plus there are reporting anomalies as per the third picture.

PS over 300 go through on green.

*more like ½ (50:50 not 200:50)

NYC cycle usage is very different inside and outside Central Park in Manhattan. It’s more like North Holland inside, and southeast London outside, despite inside being a bit hillier. Conclusion - make your cycle infrastructure like your parks. (see also Alt text)

If the high hedges can’t go, do what is done for motorists when sightlines are bad - stop line and sign (e.g. pic). Or add signals, or carriageway and cycleway speed bumps. Loads of options that don't require barriers/dismount signs.

😂

Anyway, cracking races.

They need to seriously look at some of the people they attract. This guy in LD shorts was time trialling on - checks notes - 10 mph limit Middle Path as I’m overtaking a kid. Ofc such distances don't cause any issues when both riders are going at a suitable pace for the environment (bottom image).

If anyone’s thinking what about the (often illegally modded) delivery bikes, these maps suggest they’re quite a small fraction of traffic, even compared with rental bikes. Round Kingston, there are a lot more L-plated motorcycles/scooters doing the job.

The End

Went off & tried to calculate it. Certainly a factor (big in Seething Wells!) - but for reasonable assumptions about number of trips and distances, non-rental cycling is also increasing. As per the plot. 1/3

They don’t need speed cushions to do that 🤦

Bunnies from the handlebars.
June 14, 2025 at 6:02 PM
Wot you want, squire, is a modern car with a wide enough wheelbase so speed cushions don’t interfere with your progress/comfort. Tesla driver found it helped with a good overtake though.

It means end of paint in Surrey. Otherwise IMO the word ‘route’ is catachrestic in all uses of the sign - it actually means ‘this specific infrastructure’, which does not necessarily end a 'route'.

It’s mostly about the shoes IMHO.

Anyway I did a quick survey of posture from video a few years ago and found national differences, which I suspect may partly be due to what’s available in the shops…

PSA for Bushy Park/Dukes Head Passage users. The passage will be fully closed closed between 26th and 30th May.

Many thanks for this, but I bet most road users would see the council’s “easier to maintain” as an excuse to do a cheapskate job - i.e. to what standard and what’s the lifetime i.e. long-term costs? There've been some excellent concrete restorations in the past few years round here. Unlike this...

These have appeared in Bushy Park. Glad I run a camera - they were a blur as I hurtled past (/s). Also Parks could put up signs telling motorists to stop for walkers to cross (instead of them waiting for a big gap or a rare kind soul) at e.g. Ham Cross & similar crossing points #doublestandards.

Getting into the vibe. My🤞 is Balsamo and Ganna.

Alt: Short video from my handlebar camera of riding over a short cobbled section of path by the Thames. Plus a squirrel (bet they don’t get that on Mons-en-Pévèle!). Dunno why it sounds like typing.

Meanwhile in Surrey you get the same (note manoeuvre starts at the wrong side of a mini-roundabout)
March 17, 2025 at 6:48 PM
Meanwhile in Brittany drivers seem to be able to stop in good time…

“You can’t just reverse out fast anymore” Erm, over and above the recommendation being to reverse *into* your drive (as most have done in the article picture)…

2/2 Also, back in your video, although I see it, I can’t get my head round this space reallocation (see Alt) - did they widen the canal?
