Were you injured? Did they stop? If not could you get their license number? Or did the jerk driver just speed away?

I have noticed that enforcement of traffic violations seems virtually nonexistent in recent years.

I will never forget being checked into the 2016 East Precinct meeting on STRs by NASTRA members who helped the sponsor write the bill w/no input from neighbors who would live w/non owner occupied STRs.
Council failed to anticipate the negative impacts on housing supply & nuisance STRs=lawmakers’ job

Nashville also had to invest hundreds of thousands in enforcement technology & hire staff. I don’t think the initial permit fees came anywhere close to covering the cost. Taxpayers subsidized STRs that were disrupting neighborhoods & reducing housing supply.

When the STR board was established it was stacked with industry insiders & bad actors got a slap on the wrist.
Plus owners could afford legal counsel & neighbors were forced to take time off work & most couldn’t afford professional representation. Neighbors faced an uphill battle.

One huge issue was Council passed an extremely permissive STR bill (which STR lobbyists helped write) without anticipating the need for a dedicated enforcement board. Codes was supposed to take on enforcement w/no additional staff. They weren’t equipped/didn’t have the proper powers.

Go to the STR appeals board & see. Early on, we were told all we needed to do was have a neighborly conversation w/the owner. Didn’t work. And it made you a target.

How else do you achieve extreme urban density? Not intended as a snarky question.

A motorcycle gang rented the wholehouse Airbnb in my quiet nabe & fired up their motorcycles at 6 am & buzzed around the streets-a literal wake up call about the disruption Airbnbs could bring. We don’t have sidewalks & people & dogs were diving into bushes to get away. Both funny & irritating.

There are many other options. Dense urban infill is certainly one. But our options are not limited to highrise apts (Nashville will never be a northeastern city & should aspire to its own urban style) or crass, loud Gatlinburg-style tourism. Let’s imagine a better future than either of those options

So we’re unhealthily dependent on an industry that promotes unhealthy behaviors. Ugh.

Is it true that Metro’s charter requires us to have a speedway at the fairgrounds?
And if so, do we have a chance in hell of avoiding the expansion being pushed as the next extension of the tourist zone into residential areas near downtown?
November 29, 2025 at 5:59 PM
We had a city that was worth visiting before our downtown was Gatlinburged. And we appear bent on destroying the tree canopy, parks & local businesses that made Nashville a fun & unique place to visit.
November 29, 2025 at 5:54 PM
No clue.
But surely we could still make tax revenue on a model that wasn’t based on people coming to Nashville to drink & eat way too much at ersatz honkytonks & chain bug-feed restaurants & services like IVs to remove excess alcohol from your body. That sounds like the decline of the Roman Empire.

Not sure what “the elite consensus on tourism” is-unsure who constitutes “the elite.”
But I hate that downtown=Gatlinburg on the Cumberland & that the needs & quality of life for locals are less of a priority than catering to the tourism industry.
And that started BEFORE our awful STR bill passed.

Thanksgiving in Dallas w/my husband’s brother, a phenomenal cook. I made my wild rice w/mushrooms & shallots & wine sauce & Waldorf salad w/pomegranate seeds & pecans & pound cake & a pecan pie & felt like I had at made a contribution. Only 5 of us at table-lovely & pleasant.
Happy Thanksgiving!
