This is a truly collaborative effort with @xingfan-zhang.bsky.social, co-led the research with me. And a very special thanks to 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐥𝐨𝐰 (UCL), and Isaac Abrahams and Steve Hull for their valuable suggestions and guidance on the neutron data analysis. Grateful to all co-authors.

By bridging neutron total scattering experiments with high-throughput atomistic simulations, we showed how tiny dopant size changes can drive major shifts in vacancy behaviour and atomic arrangements in doped ceria—connecting defect features with macroscopic transport properties in a new way.
