There’s a story that seems to have originated with @IamRageSparkle on X (formerly Twitter) about the nazi bar, and it is worth retelling here: There was a patron who walked into a city pub on Monday and sat down, quietly ordering a beer. The bartender simply responded, “I won’t serve you, get out.” A second patron was surprised and asked the bartender why he kicked the first person out when he seemed polite and had done nothing out of order. “He has a nazi symbol on his jacket and a nazi tattoo, but will drink politely here all night if I let him. Tomorrow he’ll come back with a friend or two, and they will also drink politely all evening. On Wednesday he will bring more friends and they will not be as nice. The regular customers will leave. By Thursday my bar has become a nazi bar. ” Zero tolerance for nazis. When I have shared this in workshops before, I have sometimes had pushback (mostly from older white christian men) that we need to be welcoming to everyone and maybe they will change their minds. No. Zero tolerance for nazis. You will not have a nice church with a nazi member. You will have a nazi church. Boundaries are important.
