The last few years have seen the largest wave of immigration in American history. All those images we carry in our heads about people arriving at Ellis Island — we just surpassed that. Crime went down. Real wages went up. This is a fake problem. Enough is enough.

Owensoff IG: Under Oregon law, it is unequivocally illegal for a non-consenting third party to use any device to intercept, access, or otherwise obtain the contents of a private electronic communication, including text messages, regardless of whether the communication occurs in a public or private setting. The willful publication of such unlawfully obtained material only compounds the violation and exposes the actors involved to additional civil and criminal liability. In this case, the reporter was not a participant in the communication and knowingly used a device-whether a phone, camera, or other recording means-to intercept and capture private text messages without the consent of any party. This conduct squarely violates ORS 165.540 and constitutes a potential Class A misdemeanor under Oregon law. The actions taken by The Mercury and its reporter demonstrate a reckless disregard for state privacy statutes and basic journalistic ethics. Absent an immediate and public apology acknowledging this unlawful conduct, along with corrective action by the publication, both The Mercury and the individual responsible will likely hear my attorney. It is astonishing that the DSA Peacocks appear to operate under the delusion that Oregon law does not apply to them. It does-and the consequences will follow.
