I live in the cornfields. I care about oral history, Asian American studies, and education :)
My one contribution to the field of oral history: don't interview rapists in community history projects!!! No matter how important they were to the community.

Message me if you want to read the entire article. I am very proud of this one.

In 2020 my grandma said "I want to live long enough to see you finish your phd." When I told her it would take at least five years she laughed and said "never mind then!"

She called me this weekend to say "congratulations doctor."

This! Also here's a really great article that tackles a very similar dilemma:
Agnew, Elizabeth N. "On (Not)“Humanizing” Muslims: Challenge and Opportunity in an Oral History Project with American Muslims." The Oral History Review 49, no. 2 (2022): 178-198.
The Palestinians don't need anyone to "humanise" them; they are human beings just like us, Westerners. Those who don't understand this will never do so and are the ones who need to be humanised.

also i don’t actually think age is a real limiting factor on intelligent discourse about race bc there are old people who are cool as fuck and young people becoming full on nazis so maybe just get your shit together!

I am writing about a janitor who cleaned a room after a school shooting and this is an incredibly emotional experience for me. He is no longer alive, and his archival presence is minimal... But this just feels so important to write about that I want to do so much with this paper.

My contribution to the field of oral history is don't interview rapists in your community based oral histories even if they were important to the community history.
