On today's episode of "if it's stupid and it works..." we've got an esp32 connected to an hc-sr04 ultrasonic sensor to detect whether or not the garage door is open in order to turn on the garage lights (already using a Shelly relay). Node-RED inside Home Assistant does the logic for this one.

Gonna fix this garage light issue. ESP32 with an HC-SR04 mounted above the overhead door will give me door status. I'll fire the light relay when the distance changes indicating a door open event.

Making some bookends for my daughter. Remedial woodworking with shop scraps, but somehow fulfilling!

I don't love this.

This is just crazy enough to work.

Maker Question: What would you use to segment and diffuse LEDs for the purposes of building a crowd noise hype VU meter? I'm planning an esp32 driven device that can be carried around during a pep assembly. What material would you put in front of the LEDs. I'm thinking small translucent rectangles.

I asked AI to draw me a picture of two solenoids being powered separately. It's just awful. So, so awful.

Blast from the past! This is how I tackled imaging computers 20 years ago. Symantec Ghost 7.5 and a giant unmanaged switch in the garage. Stack 'em up!

Here's the third version of the controller I built for this project. The project: place your foot under the kitchen base cabinet toe kick to trigger solenoids that turn off the water. The ultrasonic version didn't work as well (HC-SR04) so the new one is VL6810X time-of-flight.

Just building up some mana here. This is a #wled #esp32 WS2812B project that came together from leftover scraps. The wood was just junk I had laying the shop, and I had 4' of strip leftover from another project. I cut a channel in the back of the stick of wood to lay in the strip.
