Grey sky, grey gulls, grey mood, grey poem

Swan Neck Water Scape

The humble Wood Pigeon: underrated beauty in ubiquity.

Photo of a wood pigeon flying above a river. The pigeon is captured wings aloft, and tail fanned out. It is clearly moving quite fast. The pigeon’s subtle greyish, pinkish hues stand out. Behind the bird, out of focus, is a tidal river, with its muddy edge (for it is low tide) forming a dark band across the bottom of the photo. The river itself makes for a nondescript and grey background. Against this background, the image has the opening two lines of a poem called, The Sound of Pigeons in Flight by B. Odgerel. Here is the full poem: The sound of pigeons in flight
is the everyday beauty of the sky.
Like something which the wind has received,
the birds’ bright shapes are alive upon the wind.
Wheeling round, they come to earth,
better than amazement at a silent death,
and a mind of love and prayer is born.
I have seen no doubt in birds’ bodies.
The eyes of humans, alive as the birds, are bright.
A word wound, like an arrow wound, in their breasts.
In them, there is no desire for an arrow wound.
These dear people, like the birds, are shining, separate.
So the death of humans is secret and sweet.
They have a hidden and an ordinary joy, as though traveling to Heaven.

Around us, the deserters farewell them in prayer,
and, while the behaviors of birds and humans are different,

The Past, Present and Future of Waterloo

At the end of the walkway, ahead of you, and covering most of the scene in front of you, is a closed black double door. Across the top of it is a sign saying, ‘Occupational Health’. There is some small text underneath talking about an art project. But the scene doesn’t look very celebratory. It all looks quite grim. On the right edge of the scene is the pavement running alongside the covered walkway. A man is walking while pushing a bike, heading towards you. Another man is crossing the street behind him, just after an open-top tourist bus has gone past. You can see the back end of it. Beyond all this is the glass frontage of a modern office building.

Herring Gull caught in a moment of disappointment and regret immediately after a failed fishing expedition

Free Bird, not Caged Bird

Two Shelduck banking left in the crisp autumn air
