The Jimmy Stewart Museum
@jimmy-dot-org.bsky.social
The Jimmy Stewart Museum is located in Mr. Stewart’s hometown of Indiana, PA. Exhibits honor his life, film career, and military service.
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON was intended as a follow-up to Frank Capra’s MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN. When Cooper wasn’t available, Capra turned to Jimmy Stewart, saying, “I knew he would make a hell of a Mr. Smith. He looked like the country kid, the idealist.”

Jimmy requested Henry Fonda be cast in THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB (1970). They had most recently worked together in Firecreek (1968). Their first film together was On Our Merry Way (1948), and they both were in How the West Was Won (1962) but had no scenes together despite playing best friends.

While filming THE SHOOTIST (1976) the cavernous sound stages made it hard for Jimmy to hear cues. Director Don Siegel accused him of not trying hard enough. John Wayne shot back with a line borrowed from John Ford: “If you’d like the scene done better, you’d better get a couple of better actors.”

THE SHOOTIST (1976) was the conclusion to John Wayne’s 50 year career in films. Jimmy took the role as “Doc” Hostetler as a favor to Wayne.

CALL NORTHSIDE 777 (1948) was a turning point for James Stewart’s career after World War II.

The role gave him a harder-edged, world-weary persona—more in line with his age and experiences after the war.

It paved the way for the more complex, nuanced roles that would define Stewart’s 1950s work.

Based on a true story, CALL NORTHSIDE 777 (1948) stars Jimmy as Chicago reporter P.J. McNeal who re-opens a ten-year old murder case. Helen Walker, Richard Conte and Lee J. Cobb co-star.

Jimmy said that his favorite role was Elwood P. Dowd in HARVEY-celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. It’s the only time he earned an Oscar nod for a film that wasn't up for Best Picture.

He said that Josephine Hull had the toughest role—believing and not believing in Harvey at the same time.
