While many cities in the Global North have seen improvements, pollution is still rising in much of the Global South — where communities often have the least capacity to adapt and the most to lose.

Our Air Quality Stripes (inspired by @edhawkins.org) show how air pollution has changed since 1850 around the world. (airqualitystripes.info)

It’s estimated that 8 million people worldwide die each year from breathing polluted air — a reminder that air quality is a global health crisis as well as an environmental one. @ihmeuw.bsky.social

In three days, #COP30 starts in #Belém, Brazil, let’s remember that climate action isn’t just about climate - it’s also a good way to clean the air we breathe.
Many of the steps we take to tackle #climatechange can also bring immediate air-quality benefits.

"As Yorkshire prepares for what is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far, records show the region has endured its driest combined February, March and April for almost 90 years." Some farms have seen less than 25mm of rain in past 10 weeks, we are in a critical time of year for farmers

On the 5th anniversary of the first UK #lockdown, I looked back on the estimated cumulative excess deaths during #COVID-19 produced by @ourworldindata.org (data via @economist.com & @who.int) and compared to the annual estimate of 7m deaths per year from #AirPollution (also via @who.int)

Great to see our #AirQualityStripes getting a mention in the recent article from @weforum.org - We got the nod in 4 - Data is Queen @kirstypringle.bsky.social

Yesterday was spent at my cousin's school yesterday in York, I was there for British Science Week, talking about a wide range of topics aligned with what the children have done this academic year, or are doing very soon.

A great piece of television and hats off to @netflix for going beyond their usual role. Some are going so far to call it the "British Erin Brockvich".
The cast is fantastic and the tragic story is very well told, many of the messages in the drama have not gone away. #ToxicTown
March 5, 2025 at 2:27 PM
As has been the case in past such tragedies, money trumped safety, the lorries weren't washed or covered when they left the site because the drivers were paid a bonus for extra loads! They generated plumes of dust containing cadmium, a toxic heavy metal which people breathed in
March 5, 2025 at 2:27 PM
#ToxicTown tells the shocking tale of what happened when rules designed to protect the workers AND the local population were ignored and the terrible repercussions for the innocents. The victims received compensation and an apology. The whistleblower at the council mysteriously lost his job!
March 5, 2025 at 2:27 PM
Myself and @kirstypringle.bsky.social were asked to review #ToxicTown, the new @netflix.com drama about the cluster of birth differences in Corby during the clean-up of the old steel works. It is a hard watch, with strong messages reminding us of the need for environmental regulations.

In 2020, a massive dust outbreak occurred, nicknamed #Godzilla, imaged by the EPIC sensor on DSCOVR the plume stretched across the Atlantic. BUT natural-color images like this, couldn't provide the dust’s height in the atmosphere. NOW WE CAN!
February 12, 2025 at 11:52 AM
Advances in data extraction from satellite sensors reveal the height of dust storms. Researcher Jun Wang said
“our team at the University of Iowa has developed an algorithm that derives that information using information from its oxygen A and B bands.”

In 2021, the WHO estimated that over 99% of the world's population 'lives' above their guideline for PM2.5 of 5 ug/m3
Some cities ARE getting better BUT very many still have a long way to go. The #airqualitystripes shows the trends from 1850 to 2022 in over 200 cities www.airqualitystripes.info
February 5, 2025 at 9:28 PM
By comparison, the COVID-19 pandemic caused around 5 million deaths globally in 2020, and around 12 million deaths in 2021, according to the WHO.
In fact studies have found increased COVID-19 mortality follows PM2.5 levels www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
February 5, 2025 at 9:28 PM
The @who.int recognises air pollution as the biggest global health threat today. Every year, exposure to ambient #airpollution is estimated to cause around 4.5 million premature deaths globally, and indoor #airpollution causes a further 2.3 million.
