Saved this for last, I think it should be upped to Ten GOTY slots.
There are only upsides to this, most notably that the GOTY Orchestra, the universally-agreed-to-be best part of the show, would be even longer.

This is a very silly one but I think it would be so fun to add an Original Song category, especially because it would template the in-ceremony performances, making them feel so much less random.
Also change Score and Music's name to Original Score.

Now we're getting into very uncritical territory but I think this would be a worthy add.
I don't mind them breaking into a few categories like performance as they have from time to time, but I generally think they should be their own thing.

If they wanted to create more counterparts to the Oscars, I think they could also split Art Direction even more:
Add in Environment Design to be Production Design and Character Design to be Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling.

On top of splitting between Lead and Supporting, I think, and maybe VAs will disagree with me but, they could theoretically be split between what I can only describe as “Type A” (~No Mouth Movement) and “Type B” (~Mouth Movement) Performances.

I think a perfect way to make the Family category feel less like whatever Nintendo games came out that year is to fuse then split those two into Competitive Multiplayer and Cooperative Multiplayer, it would really balance out both.

Would this be simple to accomplish and narrow down?
Probably not, I would love Stealth and Interactive Narrative Design to be represented but I don’t see that happening.
Nonetheless, I think at least something like this would be a much better system.

And just to be clear, Indie, Debut, and Impact should stay for the same reason Animated and International Feature should.
Obviously they should also break into other areas more often, but I don’t think having a specific area for them is a bad thing.

#7.7 - Category Overhaul:
Plus adding stuff like Platforming and Puzzle Design would give games that usually get locked out of these categories an actual chance.
Adding “techs” like these would open up such a wider breadth of nods and winners.

However, there don’t have to be 1-1 replacements.
Get rid of Action and /Adventure and add in categories like Best Combat Design, Exploration Design, Level Design.
That way there's not just other categories for the same few games to get into and win.

Some of these are easy.
Turn Role Playing into Best Role Playing Design.
Turn Sports/Racing into Best Sports/Racing Design.
Split Sim/Strategy into Best Simulation Design and Best Strategy Design, there’s no shortage of games to go around in those.

And this becomes even more apparent when you look at “Action” and “Action/Adventure,” because how do you quantify them as genres?
And if you can’t quantify them as genres, as elements, then the categories become even more supplementary and pointless.

Look at Best RPG.
This year, Rebirth is going to win and I’ll be happy for it, but I think it’s a good example of how the winner of that category isn’t “Best Implementation of RPG Mechanics,” it’s “Best Game that Happens to Fit into the RPG Genre.”

Okay, those changes are all be relatively straightforward, but there’s one more major thing that I not only think should be updated, but should be overhauled entirely:
To put it bluntly, I think the Genre Categories should be completely replaced.

Whilst we're on this, I say split that up too: Original and Adapted.
Not quite as significant or necessary as the previous two but I still think it would make it feel so much more well rounded.

Another category split I think is crucial.
To use 2019 as an example, it is crazy that GRIS and Death Stranding are competing in the same visuals category, only to both lose to midpoint Control, so split it into Art Direction and Visual Effects.

Granted it seems like negotiations are occurring right now so maybe this won’t be an active issue, but even if they get resolved and the performers are actually able to show up and accept the awards, please acknowledge them.

To that point, if this year doesn’t fix it already, jesus christ, split Performance into Leading and Supporting. It is absolute madness that this hasn’t been done already.

I can’t believe I have to say this, but, with rare exception, most of the categories are still listed as going to the studios, and that is insane.
The fact that Game Direction doesn’t officially go to the Game Director is utterly ridiculous.

…Concord.
Wait, actually, yes, please, that would be the funniest thing in the World.
And then just give the other one to MatPat, no one deserves it more, come on now.

Otherwise, Knuckles, Tomb Raider, and hopefully Pokémon Concierge all seem solid, with Like a Dragon: Yakuza, Halo S2, and Sonic Prime S3 rounding off the backups.
